Is Elihu the villain of Job?

Take another look at Job chapter 34:3-4 “For the ear tests words as the tongue tastes food.Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn together what is good.”

“Let us discern for ourselves what is right.” What does that remind you of?

The lie in the garden.

There’s been theories about the book of Job that Elihu is some kind of divine prosecutor. He’s not. He’s satanically inspired and I believe the text is shouting that at us.

The Story of Job: Part 3 of 4

When people begin to interpret the Book of Job, they begin with the presupposition that God’s intention in this is either challenging Satan or causing something to happen so that He’ll be more glorified.
Job 1:8 may be the most misunderstood verse: “Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

But if we back up we’ll see that Satan has already been looking for a way to destroy Job. With Satan’s challenge to God, he is trying to get at the heart at the difference between himself and God and what it means to have authority.

The Story of Job: part 1 of 4
Job has to be read as a story. That’s the first thing. Secondly, the understanding of the dualistic nature of reality (the physical and spiritual realms portrayed in the book of Job) has a quality to them that is a Biblical perspective. The spiritual world is mirrored by the physical world that follows.

One of my favorite books of the Bible used to be my least favorite. I believe the book of Job is doing foundational work in terms of the narrative of scripture, but in order to understand it we have to understand the narrative markers of scripture.
There’s a lot here and many videos to come over the next few weeks. I encourage you to read through the book of Job in advance and come with questions and comments as we explore this book through yet another perspective you probably haven’t considered before.
