This summer I was delighted to receive an invitation to teach a week-long theology track at the Masters Guild in Mt. Morris, NY. I taught three classes each day, generally on the wrap-around porch of an old Victorian-style house, and the great joy of the experience was introducing the concept of Narrative Theology to folks who’ve read the Bible their whole lives but never recognized the story patterns that make it so recognizably human.

The most fascinating and revelatory content in Scripture is usually hidden behind doors marked “weird.” Opening those doors is essential to understanding the depth and relevance of the Bible. And the key to unlocking them is the language of Story.

When it comes to the actual voice of God, the result is sheer terror.

This picture is like a metaphor of human nature and what we want in our relationship with God. We want a secondhand relationship. We want someone else to go to God.
We don’t actually want the thing we say we want. We’d prefer to stay at a distance.
