The Sign Language and Autism (SL@M) Lab at Miami University

Under the direction of Dr. Aaron Shield, the SL@M Lab seeks to understand how various populations of children and adults acquire signed and spoken languages The Sign Language and Autism at Miami (SL@M) Lab investigates how the signed languages of the Deaf community are learned by various groups of people:

deaf children, hearing children of Deaf parents, children with autism spectrum disorder, and typical hearing adults. Through these studies, we hope to gain insight into the cognitive skills needed to acquire sign language, and how they may differ from the skills required to learn a spoken language.
