Hey Wolverines! Did you know that 75% of our students and employees recently reported that they feel like they belong at UVU? Our office wants to help UVU continue to be a place for everyone. One of our goals is to have resources available for employees to increase their cultural competency and foster a sense of belonging. 🤝🏽 Our team also uses data and analysis to look for areas of improvement. 📏 We love to hear about what's working and isn't, so check us out when you get a chance! 💚 Go Wolverines!

The Office of Institutional Engagement and Effectiveness hosted its annual Champions of Inclusion luncheon yesterday where we recognized exceptional staff, faculty, department, student, and community partners that go above and beyond to promote inclusivity on our campus and in our community. Additionally, we recognize our Foundations of Inclusion certified recipients for their passion and dedication to inclusion.

We were honored to have had Trustee Noel Vallejo speak at our event yesterday and thank him and his family greatly for their attendance. It was truly special to hear about his story and the impact of others students stories. Through his message, it was clear his dedication to our university and its students. We also thank President Astrid Tuminez for her presence and support and for accompanying us in presenting our student award.

Yesterday was the wrap up cabinet lunch and presentation with the Presidential Intern Cohort for the 23-24 academic year. We were all able to reflect on our experience through highlights and the lessons we learned. I was able to reflect on the opportunity to serve on various committees, help with the reframing of the office, and the mentorship I received as part of my internship with the Office of Institutional Engagement and Effectiveness. This internship allowed me the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and learn new things by taking on individual projects as well as work collaboratively with a team. I was able to see firsthand all that UVU does to truly make it a place for you through the inclusion plan, campus climate survey, and other areas.

The main lessons I take with me from this opportunity is that the unknown is an opportunity to learn and that an effective leader proactively works towards the teams success and not their individual success. We often walk away from the unknown for a fear of failure, but in reality it is an incredible opportunity to learn, especially with a supportive team. As someone who stood by individual work, I was also able to learn the importance of working collaboratively as a team, given that it brings forth multiple perspectives and the importance of the teams success. Our individual accomplishments are also out teams accomplishments and if we focus merely on our own self, we set our team up for failure.

Overall, this internship was an incredible opportunity I will always be incredibly grateful for and take what I have learned here and apply it in my future endeavors. Thank you Dr. Rasha Qudisat for your mentorship, the office for your supportive and creating a supportive environment to prosper in, and to for ensuring we as students have these kind of opportunity here at UVU.
- Angela Alcala, Intern for Dr. Rasha Qudisat
