✨Our highschool students enjoyed an amazing master class with Dr. Igor Resnianski from WCU. His expertise and experience, blended with six incredibly talented students, created an engaging afternoon of high level instruction.

Students were directed to take notes in two columns- one column for “Concepts” and another for “Practical Solutions.” After collecting the handouts, I was impressed by how much the students were able to glean from such a high level of teaching. Not to mention the things that I learned as well! I have pages of notes and general takeaways, but here’s a few of my favorite quotes…

“Talent is overrated- progress is what’s important!”
“Sound is organized vertically and horizontally.”
“Stabilize the sequence of your movements before speeding up.”
“You have a big hand, might as well use it!” 🙂
“It’s literally just labor.”
“There’s a cloud of survival hanging over the whole thing.” (Oh don’t we all know exactly what he’s talking about!😆)

Thank you Igor for coming and spending the afternoon with us!!

“We’re going to have an Informance at the end of this summer.”

I so loved this summer project we did at the studio this year. Inspired by at the virtual NCKP conference, I took the Informance idea and worked it to fit our studio.

So what is an Informance? For us, it meant a mix of three different words:
- Informal (small studio class setting)
- Informational (students informed the audience of specific listening points before playing)
- Performance (inviting parents to the class)

For our own unique spin, each student picked a piece by a living composer to learn. We played Carolyn Miller, Kevin Costley, Mary Leaf, Christopher Oill and more! Students then began to analyze and ask questions about the music as they learned it. We wrote down a few questions- such as “Is measure 17 the wind blowing the leaves up in the air?” Or “Why did you choose the borrowed chord in measure 26?”

We sent off their letters of questions to the composers, and received back the most amazing replies!! The composers were gracious, kind, informative, and inspiring. Students were spellbound as they saw their own names at the top of an email from the composer. Such a BEAUTIFUL experience for all!

Mary Leaf ended her email to one of our highschool students this way, summing up such a sweet relationship between composer and performer:

“There are any number of ways to interpret this piece, but the most important is what touches you, what you can see yourself, and what has meaning to you!”

After corresponding with the composer of their piece, students and I together created an informational PowerPoint, crafted a few sentences to present the PowerPoint, and then invited parents to our “Informance” to have a meaningful listening experience. Parents were able to hear from the students how to listen to the piece and enjoyed connecting the dots more intelligently after the presentations.

Thank you to for the inspiration, to all the composers for their amazing music and kind input, and to the parents and students who participated. Will definitely continue finding ways to keep incorporating Informances into our studio schedule! 🥰🙌🏻

It may have been a while since I’ve posted, but I’ve been experiencing some of the most rewarding few months of my career in this first half of 2025.

Teaching in a maximum security prison - with some students who are on death row - is not for the faint of heart. Every single week my sanity, belief in the beauty of music, knowledge, and very identity were all tested and challenged. I almost quit (twice). Our first session was supposed to have a recital- and didn’t. My plans were changed often. I waited… and waited… and waited… for the port doors to open. I was rushed out on a lockdown. I accidentally clicked my panic button device. 🤦🏻‍♀️ and I gave the guards at the gate something to laugh at literally every week. (Imagine me going through airport security- doesn’t go well there either!)

But in spite of the challenges, the slow progress, the setbacks- May 13, 2025 we had a successful combined groups piano recital. Seeing these students- men who at first seemed intimidating- feel the nervous energy that always accompanies performances, the incredible relief after sharing music from their heart, and then the momentary LIFT in their hearts as their audience and classmates erupted in applause and cheers for them- was inspiring and rewarding.

We ended the concert with a piano ensemble of “Lean on Me.” 10 pianos, one percussionist, me mouthing all “1-2-3-and-4-and” over and over. 🤣

I loved this experience. Music is powerful. It brings life and light to the darkest places of the world.
