Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Casa Zerilli-Marimò, New York University
Italian author Elsa Morante is having today a deserved though much-deferred recognition as one of the truly outstanding writers of the 20th century writers, well beyond Italy. Morante has been a source of inspiration and a constant challenge for generations of women writers since – one has to think of Elena Ferrante, who fashioned her nickname as an homage to her favorite author. Today, prestigious new translations into English captivated a new readership able to appreciate her legacy, beginning with the 50th anniversary of her most controversial and beloved novel, La Storia (History: A Novel), which the new issue of the prestigious journal Annali d’Italianistica dedicated to Morante will celebrate.

Speakers:
Franco Baldasso (Bard College, editor of Annali d’Italianistica)
Stefania Porcelli (Hunter College, editor of Annali d’Italianistica)
Ann Goldstein (translator NYRB)
Jenny McPhee (NYU, translator NYRB)
