Domestic Violence Awareness Month | AKA Family Matters
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Through Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®️’s International Program Target 2, AKA Family Matters, we are helping raise awareness about safety, preparedness, violence prevention, and support for families and communities.
The numbers remind us why this matters. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, about 17% of homicides with known circumstances are connected to intimate partner violence, and nearly half of female homicide victims have a connection to intimate partner violence. The North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence also reports that more than 35% of women in our state experience intimate partner physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking during their lifetimes.
At our October Chapter Meeting, we wore purple to honor survivors and remember those whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence. We also shared a special meditation that gave us time to reflect, uplift survivors, and renew our commitment to awareness, prevention, and support.
Awareness is only the beginning.
Let’s keep breaking the silence, creating safe spaces, supporting survivors with compassion, and having honest conversations about healthy relationships and safer communities.
