Grace Higginbotham for PPS School Board, District 1

Grace Higginbotham for PPS School Board, District 1 Hello Friends! My name is Grace Higginbotham. I am running for PPS School Board, District 1. I looking forward to your support in the upcoming weeks!

BIO

Being an educator was not originally in Grace Higginbotham’s career plans. However, after reading an article on the Black/White achievement gap, she felt compelled to alter her path and pursue education as not only a major, but also as her life’s work. She knew that not only should she work to make a difference, she could and would do just that. So began her journey of becoming the change she

wished to see in her community’s schools. Grace obtained her Education degree at Chatham University, with a minor in Psychology and went on to get certified to teach in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As she began her teaching experience, she quickly came to see that there was not only a great need for good teachers, but she also saw how imperative it was to have exceptional, black teachers. Her overarching goal became to not only curate the best educational experiences for the students, but to also build an ecosystem of trust, resources, balance, hard work, passion, safety, and most importantly data, to be able to measure progress. After years of teaching, as well as learning from her students, Grace began to consider additional ways that she could make larger, systemic changes. She knew that by teaching she could only impact the classroom in which she was standing, but by widely sharing her approach and philosophy, she could truly move the needle. Therefore, with much introspection, she decided to transition from teaching to launch her own consulting company, focusing on cultural competency trainings for teachers and small businesses. That lane change has now led her to embark on another mission where she feels that she can be a true force for positive change and that is running for school board. It is with high hopes, that Grace will lend her skills and iron fist, with a satin glove approach, to continuing to educate the district in which she lives, provide a platform for responsible student voice, strategic planning with the teachers that serve in the district, and continued networking and relationship building with grassroots organizations to empower the community.

Good evening!

I would first like to thank everyone that supported me in my run for school board. Taking the huge step to put your name and reputation out there to the public IS NOT an easy thing to do! I have always taken pride in who I am and what I believe in. You have to be strong in this game no matter what!

Even though I did not win in the Primary Election, I am incredibly encouraged knowing that I was able to touch and most importantly MOBILIZE my community to believe and demand more!! The work that we have to do in our schools and for our children is far from done!! We still must hold our board members accountable and demand great things! Integrity, transparency, and accountability must remain at the forefront our messaging, questioning, and organizing! Our children, families and communities should and MUST remain the focal point and the bottom line to all decisions being made at the district level.

Now, I would be deceiving everyone if I were to say that I’m not disappointed. I most certainly believe in working for the people, to edify the people, and EMPOWER the people! However, I’m human too. I will extend my personal belief that I never lose, I ALWAYS learn. This was a great learning experience on what is possible if you simply believe in YOURSELF and what you can offer your fellow man. This was never about me personally, it has always, always, always been about our babies, families, communities, and teachers!!

You will be hearing more from me in the very near future. Congratulations to all the candidates on a job well done! Also, congratulations to all who have run their races and won their seats.

Have a wonderful evening!

Grace
