In their last week of summer programming, the BCSP Class of 2030 toured the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Donning their white lab coats, students were led by medical school faculty and physicians through the basics of medical school education, healthcare, jobs and received hands-on practice taking blood pressure and using stethoscopes. As part of our summer financial aid course, students took a deep dive into practical financial literacy.

We were joined by Jason Hernandez, Vice President of Community Outreach at Coastal1 Credit Union (). Hernandez led an interactive session on building a personal budget and understanding credit scores, which empowered our students with critical tools for long-term financial success.

This week, Brown Collegiate Scholars welcomed Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, Sabina Matos!

We were honored to host Lt. Governor Matos, who shared her powerful journey with our Scholars—from immigrating to the U.S. and navigating early challenges, to starting her education right here in South Providence at the International Institute (now Dorcas International Institute) and earning her degree at Rhode Island College as an adult learner.

Beyond her personal story, she provided our Scholars a look into running for office (Providence City Council and Lt. Governor) and encouraged them to become civically engaged so that their voice is represented in government. Our Scholars were grateful for her time, experience and openness. Thank you !

The inaugural cohort of the Brown Collegiate Scholars Program began its residential experience this summer, balancing academics and social activities while building independence and gaining a firsthand look at college life.

During the summers before their junior and senior years of high school, scholars live on the University’s campus alongside thousands of other high schoolers participating in Brown’s Pre-College Programs. For three weeks each July, they attend college access classes, join extracurricular activities and take on the everyday responsibilities of living independently.

“At first, I was nervous,” student Dailian said, a rising junior at Providence’s Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School. “But I adjusted much faster than I expected. After a couple days, living here felt easier than I thought it would.”

Last night our Scholars visited the Brown Summer College Fair where they were able to meet and chat with over 100 colleges, univerisities and conservatories. Part of college preparedness is learning more about different types of colleges and how to ask good questions. It was a hugely successful night and our Scholars left with newfound knowledge about the college search process.

This week, Brown Votes () welcomed Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore to speak with Brown Collegiate Scholars Program students about the history and evolution of voting rights in the United States. Throughout the summer, Brown Votes will be providing workshops for our students.

New summer, new milestones!

The BCSP Class of 2028 officially made history as our very first cohort to move onto the Brown campus for their summer program! From moving into the dorms, to campus tours and Orientation with Pre-College students, our scholars are already making themselves at home.

And the excitement doesn’t stop there; the BCSP summer program officially kicks off TODAY as we welcome the Class of 2030!
