The UC Riverside Latino and Latin American Studies Research Center’s 2026 Spring Social was a success and a testament to our mission of building community among faculty, students, and community leaders in the Inland Empire.

We are thankful to our board, UCR faculty, CSU faculty supporters, UCR alumni, graduate and undergraduate students, and our community partners, including IC4IJ, CCAEJ, San Bernardino Services Inc., East Side Art House, and the Riverside lowrider community.

A special thank you to Estela Acuña of Chicano Student Programs, David Arriaza, Taco Station staff, Monica Rocha for sharing her voice with us, Art Alcaraz of the Latino Network, UER, MEChA de UCR, and local leaders Jose Medina, Andrea Garcia, Edgar Castelan, Daniel Polk, and Jorge Hernandez of the Chicano/Latino Advisory Committee to the Chancellor.

How are women across Latin America confronting extractivism, climate crisis, and environmental injustice?

The latest issue of Latin American Perspectives (Vol. 53, No. 1) brings together new research on political ecology, gender, and resistance—highlighting Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and campesina struggles over land, water, and territory.

From mining and contamination to water scarcity and climate vulnerability, these articles foreground the central role of women in shaping environmental justice movements across the region.

We would like to welcome UCR faculty, graduate students, and community members to our Spring 2026 Writing Group, beginning this Friday, April 10.

This space welcomes a wide range of writing projects, including books, articles, dissertations, and creative work. Join us for coffee, community, and focused writing time using the Pomodoro technique.

Hosted by the UC Riverside Latino and Latin American Studies Research Center, this writing group offers a supportive space to build momentum, stay accountable, and develop work in community. Over time, it has helped foster articles, book manuscripts, dissertations, and other writing projects.

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming author talk with Elva F. Orozco Mendoza in celebration of her new book, The Maternal Contract: A Subaltern Response to Extreme Violence in the Americas. 🌎

Elva F. Orozco Mendoza is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Social and Critical Inquiry at the University of Connecticut, where her scholarship engages decolonial feminist thought, political theory, and Latin American and Latine feminist theory.
