When I was a TV anchor and reporter, we were reminded each year that Memorial Day is a day of remembrance of those whose lives were lost in service to our country. Not “the unofficial start to summer.” Not a reason to slash prices on furniture, grills, or RVs.
I remember writing it into my scripts as “more than a day off.” That phrase never left me.
This morning, as our daughters played in the living room with our puppy, I reminded them. They’re 8 and 10 — still becoming who they’ll be. My annual “lecture” is really a prayer: that they never take for granted what they enjoy. Their rights as citizens. Their freedom to speak out against injustice and advocate for others. And yes, even this day off.
“Nothing is free, girls. Even freedom has a price. Always remember that.”
To those whose loved ones paid with their lives — we honor you. To those to whom we owe this debt — we remember you.
