Oakland University's Center for Autism (OUCARES)

Oakland University's Center for Autism (OUCARES) OUCARES - Ted & Joanne Lindsay Foundation Outreach Services at the Center for Autism at Oakland University Oakland University, located in Rochester, Mich., began offering an autism endorsement certificate for teachers and other professionals more than two decades ago.
(13)

Today, the program has grown and evolved into the Oakland University Center for Autism Research, Education and Support (OUCARES). Providing innovative programs for teachers, programming and counseling for individuals and their families living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the multifaceted approach includes education for professionals, research in the field of autism education and daily living, as well as support services for families. In June of 2004, Oakland University expanded its autism expertise by establishing an autism center focused on serving the daily needs of families with a primary goal of improving quality of life. Funded solely through donations, initially from the Jack’s Place for Autism Foundation of Southfield, Mich., Oakland University has offered extensive programming to individuals and families impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Over the past three years, we have served more than 750 families through 91 sessions of 17 different programs as well as numerous special events such as the annual Family Fun Day. While the name has changed, as has our primary source of funding, Oakland University looks forward to growing with the community and continuing to be of service to those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. We continue to operate as a nonprofit and work to raise funds that will support our efforts. If you are interested in donating or assisting with raising funds, please contact our development office at (248) 370-4233 or visit the Give to OUCARES Web page.

General information

OUCARES integrates academic course work, knowledge and research with hands-on work in the community to prepare professionals to be leaders in the autism community. Through these academic and service programs, Oakland University also provides supportive individual and family programs. OUCARES, housed in the School of Education and Human Services, encourages the exchange of ideas relating to the education and support of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as provides services and support needed to improve daily living. We serve educators, caregivers and professionals who serve people with ASD, such as dentists, law enforcement officials and hair stylists. Likewise, we serve the community by providing information, awareness and inclusion opportunities. Finally, we serve all members of families impacted by ASD including the individual with ASD, parents, siblings, grandparents and extended family members.
