Researchers from the University of Rochester's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Laboratory for Laser Energetics are part of a NSF-funded center focused on predicting—and ultimately controlling—turbulence by combining experiments, theory, simulations, and AI. Congratulations to Professor Hussein Aluie and Associate Professor Jessica Shang, who will lead URochester's contributions.

Tissue chips have the potential to reduce reliance on animal testing, speed the drug discovery process, and fill gaps where animal models fail to predict harmful side effects in humans.

Researchers at the University of RochesterUniversity of Rochester recently made an important advancement toward making FDA-approved versions available for evaluating cancer immunotherapies. Their chips were accepted into the FDA’s Innovative Science and Technology Approaches for New Drugs (ISTAND) pilot program, which helps evaluate new tools for developing drugs.

Darren Lipomi, the Arthur Gould Yates Professor of Engineering and chair of the University of Rochester’s Department of Chemical and Sustainability Engineering, argues that one of the most misunderstood parts of academia is the life of a doctoral student in science and engineering. We awarded the first recipients of the Hajim School Staff Innovation Award earlier this year— a new recognition honoring staff members who have gone beyond their day-to-day responsibilities to rethink, redesign, and improve the systems and processes that power our school.

This year's honorees were selected because they did something more than simply working hard: they identified inefficiencies, engineered smarter solutions, and built improvements that will benefit students, faculty, and/or colleagues. Each recipient demonstrated a willingness to take informed risks and to learn from outcomes — the hallmarks of a true innovator. The 2026 recipients include: Jennifer Condit, Michele M. Foster, Jana Head, Mary Mendez Rizzo, Sylvia Tiballi, and Nick Valentino.
