The School of Medicine Office of Research Grants Facilitation Unit keeps School of Medicine researchers updated on important NIH developments, including changes to any requirements to award programs and application requirements.

Please be advised of the following upcoming changes to its Career Development (K) Award programs, including:

- Consolidating individual K award Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs)
- Eliminating the Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan requirement for K awards
- Clarifying how K award funds may be used for clinical trial research activities

The changes will apply to proposals with due dates on or after October 12, 2027.

The National Cancer Institute has renewed the “comprehensive” designation of UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, recognizing its excellence in research, clinical care, prevention and education.

The renewal includes a nearly $18 million grant over five years. The funding will help advance groundbreaking research, expand access to clinical trials and strengthen programs that address the region’s cancer burden.

The designation places the cancer center among an elite group of only 58 comprehensive cancer centers around the country.

Today's Featured Core: Flow Cytometry Shared Resource

The Flow Cytometry Shared Resource (FCSR) is the primary flow cytometry core laboratory at UC Davis. Its two full service locations in Davis and Sacramento are staffed by cytometry experts who assist users with experiment planning and troubleshooting, instrumentation training, operator-assisted cell sorting, data analysis and data interpretation.

Connections fuel innovation. ✨

Each month, researchers and research support professionals gather at SPARK (Supporting Partnerships and Research Knowledge) to build relationships, exchange ideas and learn about resources that support research success across UC Davis Health.

Sponsored by the Research Administration unit, this event happens every fourth Wednesday of the month in the Aggie Square first floor lobby. We're excited to announce that a SPARK event is coming to the Davis campus in September. More information will be shared in the coming weeks.

UC Davis Medical Center first in U.S. to treat heart valve condition with investigational device

UC Davis Medical Center has become the first hospital in the United States to treat a patient with symptomatic functional mitral regurgitation using a new minimally invasive therapy as part of a clinical trial.

The trial is evaluating the investigational CARLEN System, a transcatheter device designed to support the heart’s natural mitral valve without permanently altering its structure. Unlike other transcatheter mitral valve repair procedures, this device aims to preserve the valve’s anatomy while improving function.

UC Davis Medical Center is the only hospital in Northern California participating in the trial and currently offering eligible patients access to this investigational treatment option.

“We are honored to be the first U.S. hospital participating in this clinical trial and to play a role in advancing this innovative treatment option for patients,” said Gagan Singh, director of the Structural Heart Program at UC Davis Health. “Making this possible for our patient took a large team working behind the scenes for months.”

Today's Featured Core: EXPLORER Molecular Imaging Center (EMIC)

The EMIC is built around the ﬁrst FDA-cleared total-body PET/CT scanner. The scanner features unpreceded signal collection eﬃciency and a spatial resolution of up to 3 millimeters. This allows researchers to obtain excellent image quality for numerous clinical and research applications.
