Congratulations to Dr. Leslie Banes, whose team has been awarded a $3.5 Million Transformative Research Grant by the Spencer Foundation. This is a prestigious award, and only one was given nationwide! Dr. Banes and her colleagues, Dr. Araceli Feliz and Dr. Pia Wong, will focus their work on “Extending Dual Language Programs to Overcome Inequities: Developing a Roadmap for California Schools.”

Over the five-year period, the team will develop and study new models to expand high school dual language programs. The work will be implemented by a cross-institutional team including colleagues from the University of the Pacific, CSU Monterey Bay, the University of Oregon, La Verne University, Anaheim USD, Woodland Joint USD, Monterey Peninsula USD, Californians Together, and Sacramento State.

REMINDER📣 Are you fluent in ASL? Applications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Credential Program close on APRIL 1st!

This program is taught fully online by majority Deaf faculty. It also offers internship opportunities. This credential is perfect for you if you are interested in working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals from birth to 22 years of age.

Join us in celebrating Dr. Alicia Herrera, Assistant Professor in the Child and Adolescent Development program at Sacramento State.

Dr. Herrera earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from UC Davis and her MA in Developmental Teacher Education from UC Berkeley. She holds California Multiple Subject, Single Subject, and Bilingual (Spanish) credentials and has taught from preschool through high school in California and internationally.

Her work centers an ecological view of human development, focusing on antiracist ideological commitment and how professionals understand individual development within broader systems. Her recent co-authored book integrates developmental frameworks with antiracist praxis to extend that work in professional preparation. Join us in celebrating Dr. Daniel Cisneros as our Scholar of the Month!

Dr. Cisneros is a faculty member in the Counselor Education program, specializing in Mental Health, School and Career Counseling. Dr. Cisneros started his counseling career as a Professional School Counselor at an alternative high school in North Sacramento. His research was focused on the LGBTQ+ coming out process as well as utilizing corpus linguistics and films to navigate the transgender transition process. In addition, he has published research focused on Anti-racist mentorship strategies in Counselor Education.

We are excited to celebrate all of his impactful work and scholarship this month!
