Today marks the Summer Solstice—the longest day of the year and the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Summer Solstice occurs because Earth's axis is tilted approximately 23.5 degrees. As our planet orbits the Sun, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted most directly toward the Sun today, giving us the greatest amount of daylight all year.

For Earth and Environmental Scientists, the solstice is a reminder of the powerful connections between Earth's movements, seasonal changes, ecosystems, climate, and life on our planet.

As you enjoy the extra daylight, take a moment to appreciate the natural world around you—whether it's a sunrise hike, a walk through the desert, time on the water, or simply watching a sunset.

Here's to longer days, outdoor adventures, and a deeper understanding of the planet we call home.

Happy Summer Solstice from the Utah Tech Earth & Environmental Sciences Department! 🌿🌄

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, marking an important milestone in American history and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

In Earth & Environmental Sciences, we recognize that healthy communities and healthy environments are deeply connected. Access to clean air, safe water, resilient landscapes, and environmental opportunities should be available to everyone.

Today, we honor the resilience, contributions, and achievements of Black Americans while reflecting on the importance of stewardship, inclusion, and working together to create a more sustainable future for all.

Happy Juneteenth from the Utah Tech Earth & Environmental Sciences Department. 🌍

Today we celebrate the American flag—a symbol that has flown over diverse landscapes, from towering mountains and vast deserts to winding rivers, forests, and coastlines.

As Earth and Environmental Scientists, we recognize that our nation's natural resources and public lands are an important part of our shared heritage. These places provide opportunities for discovery, recreation, research, and stewardship for generations to come.

Flag Day is a reminder not only of our history, but also of our responsibility to care for the environments that sustain our communities and inspire exploration.

Whether you're hiking a trail, visiting a national park, studying local ecosystems, or simply enjoying the outdoors, take a moment today to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Happy Flag Day from the Utah Tech Earth & Environmental Sciences Department! 🇺🇸🌿

The ground beneath us is more than just dirt—it's a record of ancient environments, changing climates, volcanic eruptions, and millions of years of Earth's history.

Here in Southern Utah, the rocks around us tell stories of ancient deserts, rivers, lakes, and even dinosaurs that lived long before humans walked the Earth.

Next time you're outside, take a look down. You might be standing on a piece of Earth's history.

📸 Bonus Question:
What's the coolest rock, fossil, or natural feature you've ever found?

Students from GIS courses in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Utah Tech University contributed to this community-based project by assisting with survey design, data collection, web mapping. This work supports the documentation and preservation of historic pioneer rock walls in Leeds, Utah.
This collaboration highlights the value of community-based learning, where students apply geospatial skills to real-world challenges while contributing to local heritage and community efforts.

Every semester the SET Building lost & found turns into a hydration museum. 😅

At this point we could probably open a reusable cup store in SET 421.

If one of these emotional support water bottles belongs to you… come claim it before the collection gains sentience. 💧☕🥤
