WE’RE GROWING SOMETHING GOOD! 🌻🌱

Not only did we kick off our newest session of the POST Academy, but our Fall session of the Know, Sow, & Grow Garden Class with Ben Scow is also in full swing! 👩‍🌾🌱

This class is exceptionally fun, hands-on, and rewarding. There’s something pretty amazing about learning how to grow fresh produce right here in the desert!

And honestly…there’s nothing quite like the feeling of seeing that very first little green sprout break through the soil. It’s a tiny moment, but it feels like a BIG accomplishment!

From soil and seeds to plants, bugs, fertilization, and everything in between, our gardeners are getting their hands dirty and learning what it takes to grow a successful garden in Southern Utah.

Today marks the beginning of their journey as Director Despain leads them through their first Ethics course. The months ahead will challenge them, shape them, and prepare them for the responsibility that comes with serving their communities.

We’re excited to watch this group grow, learn, and become the professionals they are working toward becoming.

“Strength gets you through the academy. Character carries you through the career.”

Congratulations, POST Academy Session 23!👮‍♂️

Through the sweat, the long nights, and probably a few tears, Session 23 has officially reached the finish line!

The demands of academic and physical training pushed these cadets beyond what they thought they could do. They worked hard, challenged themselves, supported one another, and came out stronger on the other side.

We are incredibly proud of the men they have become and the great things we know they will accomplish. They are now ready to serve, protect, and make a difference in the communities they represent.

Congratulations, Session 23! Your hard work has paid off. Now go out there and do great things.

🌱 Meet Your Know, Sow & Grow Expert – Ben Scow! 🌱

🌿 Registration is now open for the Fall 2026 Gardening Class!
Join us and learn from a local gardening expert who can help you grow with confidence in Southern Utah’s unique desert climate.

Ben Scow is an Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Assistant Professor with Utah State University Extension serving Washington County. Since joining Extension in 2017, he has worked with home gardeners, commercial producers, and landscape enthusiasts to provide practical, research-based solutions for successful growing.

Ben specializes in fruit trees, vegetable gardening, water-wise landscaping, integrated pest management, and sustainable gardening practices. From pruning techniques and diagnosing plant problems to improving landscapes, Ben enjoys making university research easy to understand and apply.

With experience as a nursery manager and small engine mechanic, along with helping manage an eight-acre commercial peach orchard, Ben brings a practical, hands-on approach to gardening. His goal is to help gardeners of all experience levels learn, grow, and succeed.
