Library Director, David Stewart makes this week's staff recommendation:

"You probably have noticed that at any given time there are certain book covers that seem to be everywhere you look? A recent example for me has been Delia Owens’ 2018 novel Where the Crawdads Sing. I was loaned a copy by a friend on my recent trip out to British Columbia, and liked how the author (a zoologist - this is her first novel) brings together the uniqueness of the natural world with a good plot which includes a murder mystery. A bit like John Grisham but with much better character development."

Welcome back to campus! We are happy to see you and hope you have a fun and safe start to your year. The library has space for you to spread out and the campus has lots of outside space where you can gather at safe distances. These throwback pictures of Dorm Life from our Digital Library show Bethel's campus when it was across from the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in the 1950s. Bethel moved to our current location in 1972.

Research Librarian Karen Dubay officially retired on Friday after 14 years! Congratulations, Karen!

She will be pursuing some of her other passions like reading manuals (she really like reading them!)

Here’s her shelf of sewing books, sure to keep her busy as she repairs sewing machines, explores free-motion quilting, and sews.

Thanks for all your contributions, Karen! We'll miss you!

Today's shelfie comes from Research Assistance Librarian Cory Whipkey. "I have been trying to catch-up on the many history books I’ve collected. This is just a small sample of what I am reading through. My favorite so far is Manhunt by James Swanson. It chronicles the hunt for John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated President Lincoln."

Service of Lament

This service of lament for the Bethel community this past week was to memorialize the tragic death of George Floyd and the aftermath of what happened in the Twin Cities and around the world. It was powerful and includes many kinds of lament from Scripture, poetry, and a tribute to his life as community mentor and member of a Christian community of faith. Thank you to the Office of Christian Formation and Church Relations for organizing it. We grieve his loss and lament the forces of racism that continue to impact the community of color for generations. George Floyd's memorial service was yesterday at the campus of North Central University and was a powerful tribute and call for justice as well. Our President-elect, Ross Allen was there and was very impacted by the service.

If you are wondering, "what next?", particularly if you are not a person of color, there are a variety of resource lists and suggestions for action available. A classic book to look into this issue and prepare to have conversations about race is called Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? : and Other Conversations About Race is available as a ebook in the Library here - https://clicsearch.bethel.edu/permalink/01CLIC_BETHEL/5rnmhf/alma991005683743203686

For more resources this is a list of resources from the library that are available online related to the subject of United States Race Relations - https://clicsearch.bethel.edu/discovery/search?query=sub,exact,United%20States%20--%20Race%20relations,AND&vid=01CLIC_BETHEL:BETHEL&mfacet=tlevel,include,online_resources,1&mode=advanced

Another helpful list, particularly for educators, is this Scaffolded Anti-Racist Resources - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PrAq4iBNb4nVIcTsLcNlW8zjaQXBLkWayL8EaPlh0bc/preview?pru=AAABcp8e_X0*FrhY-zp82JWiH2OuGBcq7Q

I'm Kent Gerber and I manage the Makerspace and the digital collections of Bethel's history, culture, and scholarship. It is a privilege to share with the world everything from items in Bethel's archives, to student study abroad photos, to videos of faculty presentations in our Primetime series. In this historic time, you have the chance to add your story to a collection we are creating right now with the Pandemic collection. See our bio link to share your story. If you look at my window you will see my tribute to some lions that I admire, in addition to Bethel's very own Roy the lion, they remind me of the two iconic lions, Patience and Fortitude, that embody library values at the front entrance to the New York Public Library. We need both of these as we live in a time of rapid change and uncertainty. For bonus points, can you find the third cat in this picture?
