The new Institutional Faculty Advisory Body at UTSA - The University of Texas at San Antonio held its launch retreat last week, with three School of Dentistry faculty among its members.

Dr. Bennett T. Amaechi, Dr. Enas Bsoul and Dr. Sohini Dhar are serving on the IFAB, a university-wide body bringing together faculty from every college and school across the academic and health campuses.

The IFAB serves as a central forum for faculty perspectives, feedback and recommendations to institutional leadership on faculty affairs, graduate education, research and scholarly activities, and university curriculum.

We're glad to see our faculty contributing to that work alongside colleagues from across the institution.

Roadrunners, we've got you covered. 🦷 🏈

Ahead of kickoff, School of Dentistry faculty member Dr. Scott Stafford scanned the teeth of UTSA - The University of Texas at San Antonio football players and 3D printed a dental model of each player’s mouth in our lab.

He delivered the models to UTSA's athletic training staff and student athletic trainers, then taught them how to form custom-fitted mouthguards so players can get a fresh guard any time they need one this season.

Why it matters: a custom-fitted mouthguard offers better protection and durability, and it's comfortable enough that athletes actually keep it in.

Congratulations to School of Dentistry faculty member Fred T. Philips, DDS, FICD, FACD, FPFA, nominated for the Texas Academy of General Dentistry's Texas Dentist of the Year by the San Antonio District Dental Society.

A respected leader in organized dentistry and a longtime champion of continuing education, Dr. Philips spent 38 years in private practice before joining our faculty to mentor the next generation of dentists. Our students have twice named him Professor of the Year.

The honoree will be announced at the Texas Academy Awards on Friday, Sept. 18. However the night goes, Dr. Philips is already a winner to us.

"Graduate retention is one of the most meaningful ways we fulfill our mission to serve the public good," said Francisco G. Cigarroa, MD, senior executive vice president for health affairs and health system.

Our School of Dentistry graduates are answering a real need. Areas of Texas face shortages in dental care, and our students and residents train in the clinics and communities where that shortage is felt.

Students gain hands-on clinical experience in diverse care settings and often continue their education and careers within the same health systems. Those pathways prepare our graduates to deliver exceptional patient care and build the talent pipeline Texas is counting on.
