"Becoming the 61st Watermelon Royalty is a memory I will cherish forever. As a commuter student for all four years, finding a sense of community at such a large university wasn't always easy. Ever since my freshman year at UC San Diego, watching the annual Watermelon Drop with its Pep Band, treats, and vibrant crowd gave me a tradition to feel a part of. Fulfilling this top item on my UCSD bucket list was a running joke among my family and friends, who knew how much I dreamed of dropping that melon from Urey Hall to mark the end of classes.

In my final year, after completing the scavenger hunt, winning musical chairs, and gathering the most votes, I was thrilled to be crowned the 2025 Watermelon Royalty. Having my dad, little sister, and friends there to dance with the band and share in this moment made it even sweeter. Running up the steps of Urey Hall, smiling, dancing, and waving to the crowd below made Friday, June 6th, 2025, the absolute happiest day of my undergraduate experience as a Revellian. High school prom or homecoming queen never appealed to me, but becoming Watermelon Queen was the ultimate way to truly feel connected to my campus."

The dining scene at UC San Diego continues to grow, with new restaurants and cafes opening across campus this fall and even more on the way.

Newly opened spots include the renovated Pines residential dining restaurant and Morning Fog coffee bar, Slice at Muir College, K-Central and Athena Matcha and More in North Torrey Pines, and Cecil’s at the Faculty Club.

Coming soon: Station8 Public Market, Gong Cha, Jeffs’ Beach Burgers and Goop Kitchen.

From quick bites and coffee runs to late-night pizza and global flavors, there are more ways than ever to eat, meet and connect on campus.

Over the past decade, the dining scene at UC San Diego has exploded, with a variety of new restaurants opening each year. That trend continues as several new restaurants debut this fall and in the months to come.

Calling artists across the San Diego–Tijuana region!

UC San Diego has launched the ArtsConnect Prize, a new $20,000 biennial award supporting the creation of an interdisciplinary work that will culminate in a weeklong residency and public presentation at the university in October 2027.

The prize is open to emerging and established artists across all disciplines who are based in the San Diego–Tijuana region and have at least five years of professional experience. Artists may apply individually or as a collective of up to three people.

UC San Diego alumni who graduated at least five years ago are eligible; current UC San Diego faculty, staff and students are not eligible.

Applications are open through Dec. 18, 2026.
