We were excited to bring together CADRE alumni Harpuneet Virk, Sofia Mendez Hernandez, Antonina Trusova, and Emily Tran, who are all beginning their next chapter at UC San Diego this fall as transfer students from Mesa College.

These CADRE alumni continue to support one another as they navigate this exciting transition, sharing UC student resources, comparing class schedules, and preparing for the start of the fall quarter.

💚 Depression Awareness Month

October is Depression Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about depression, reduce stigma, and highlight research focused on improving mental health care.

At UC San Diego, researchers are studying new ways to better understand and treat anxiety, depression, and social disconnection. One current study, the Social Connectedness Study, is exploring whether a dopamine-related medication may help improve motivation, interest, pleasure, well-being, and social connectedness in adults ages 18–50 experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression. Additional psychiatry studies from UC San Diego collaborators are also helping advance research on mood, behavior, and mental health.

ACTRI supports this work by providing the clinical and translational research infrastructure that helps move discoveries into patient care. Through clinical studies and collaborative research, ACTRI helps advance more effective and personalized approaches to mental health treatment.

Together, research, awareness, and compassionate care can help improve support and outcomes for those affected by depression.

Recently at ACTRI, the OCR held a successful Investigator Workshop led by Dr. Susan Little—Professor of Medicine, Director of the Office of Clinical Research Health Sciences, and Infectious Disease Specialist at UC San Diego Health. Attendees gathered to review core research guidelines, ethical standards, and operational requirements.

The event also featured great networking and lunch for all participants. It was a wonderful opportunity for investigators to connect, learn, and collaborate on clinical research operations.

🧪 What does a day in the life of a CADRE Scholar look like?

For Lucy Mellinger, it meant treating her cell culture with rapamycin, an mTOR inhibitor she researched and selected to use alongside spironolactone, a drug previously shown to suppress HIV.

Lucy’s research explored how mTOR may influence spironolactone-induced HIV suppression in microglial cells, giving her hands-on experience investigating complex questions in HIV research.

Join us in congratulating Sofia Mendez Hernandez on graduating from the 2026 CADRE Cohort!

For her final presentation, Sofia shared a comprehensive look at her research journey and the skills and experiences she gained throughout the program.

This summer, Sofia’s research in the Gur-Cohen Lab focused on modifying a fluorescent reporter plasmid to better study cellular interactions within the tumor microenvironment. Her work involved replacing a green-fluorescing GFP with a blue-fluorescing mTagBFP2.

Because Sox9+ cells already fluoresce green in their genetic model, this modification allows researchers to clearly distinguish between the two signals during imaging. Through these experiences, Sofia gained valuable hands-on skills while contributing to advanced imaging capabilities in tumor biology.

Congratulations, Sofia, on your hard work and outstanding scientific achievements!
