When she was growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts, Lindsey Waitt dreamed of working for NASA. On Oct. 18, 2019, NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch conducted the first-ever all-female spacewalk. The two spent more than 7 hours outside the International Space Station working to replace a failed battery unit. Koch subsequently circled the Moon as part of the Artemis II crew, and last week she was named NASA's acting deputy chief engineer. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sally Ride Science, we're sharing "25 Things You Might Not Know About Sally Ride." For instance, did you know that America's first woman in space was a serious Trekkie? Growing up, Ride was a big fan of the original "Star Trek" TV series. In 1995, she attended a premiere screening of the "Star Trek: Voyager" series. Actress Kate Mulgrew, aka Captain Janeway, gave Ride a Star Trek crew pin. NASA astronaut Christina Koch, who flew around the Moon in April as part of the Artemis II crew, has been named acting deputy chief engineer for the space agency. In her new administrative role, Koch is no longer eligible for spaceflight assignments. The change means none of the Artemis II astronauts is eligible for future space missions. Commander Reid Wiseman and pilot Victor Glover stepped down from NASA's astronaut corps last month and took on voluntary roles as emeritus astronauts. Happy birthday to retired NASA astronaut Kate Rubins, who became the first person to sequence DNA in space during a 2016 mission aboard the International Space Station. Rubins got her bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from UC San Diego, home of Sally Ride Science, and her doctorate from Stanford. She flew in space twice, and after retiring from NASA in 2025, she became director of the Trivedi Institute for Space and Global Medicine at University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences. https://tinyurl.com/bdam673d NASA photo

Back on Earth: in 1984, Sally Ride and crewmates exited shuttle Challenger after landing at Kennedy Space Center in Florida to end mission STS-41G. It was Ride's second spaceflight and the first NASA mission focused almost entirely on studying Earth. On , we salute NASA astronaut Nicole Aunapu Mann, who served as commander of the SpaceX Dragon Crew-5 flight to the International Space Station in 2022 to become the first Native American woman in space. Mann, a Marine Corps colonel and pilot, is a member of the Wailacki tribe of the Round Valley Indian Tribes in California. On Oct, 11, 1984, Kathy Sullivan became the first American woman to walk in space. The milestone took place during mission STS-41G aboard shuttle Challenger, the first space mission with two female crew members — Sullivan and Sally Ride. During the 3½-hour spacewalk, Sullivan and crewmate David Leestma did a trial transfer of fluid to show that it was possible to refuel satellites in orbit. https://buff.ly/dBQYU22 NASA photo
