The SHI-SDSU Advanced Maritime (SSAM) Center has officially launched new binational research projects with Samsung Heavy Industries and the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology.

The projects bring together expertise from the U.S. and South Korea to advance manufacturing technologies and strengthen workforce development. Together, these efforts will help support the future of the U.S. commercial shipbuilding industry.

Researchers from the SDSU College of Engineering will help lead projects exploring AI and virtual reality training for shipbuilding workers, advanced friction stir welding techniques and AI-enabled monitoring designed to improve weld quality and efficiency.

For SDSU mechanical engineering student Preston Hiramoto, the collaboration also opens doors for students interested in entering the growing maritime industry. “As a sophomore, it’s difficult to find shipbuilding experience, so these research partnerships are one of the best ways to get my foot in the door,” Hiramoto said.

A new perspective on powerful waves. 🌊

SDSU’s Dr. Ignacio Sepúlveda is helping uncover new details about how tsunamis travel across the ocean. After the July 2025 earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, the SWOT satellite captured a detailed view of the tsunami, revealing smaller waves trailing behind the leading wave.

Featured in 13abc’s “Moment of Science,” Sepúlveda shares how these observations are opening doors to a better understanding of tsunamis.

Congratulations to our SDSU College of Engineering students for earning first place in the inaugural 2026 IEEE SMC AI-Powered Collaborative Autonomy Challenge!

The team, composed of Ph.D. and master’s students alongside a high school student, developed and demonstrated an AI-powered multimodal autonomous delivery system using both a ground vehicle and an aerial vehicle in an urban environment. Their solution advanced through the virtual stage and on-site finals at the 2026 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics in Bellevue, Washington, earning the $2,000 first-place prize. 🎉

This achievement showcases the impact of hands-on engineering research, technical problem-solving and collaboration in advancing next-generation autonomous systems. Join us in congratulating the team on this outstanding recognition.
