Yesterday, Texas State University welcomed Nucleate Texas to campus for an Activator information session and networking event, connecting students, researchers, faculty, and members of the innovation community interested in biotechnology, entrepreneurship, and translational research.

For the Translational Health Research Center, this partnership is part of our broader Bioscience Education and Training Research (BETR) efforts to help strengthen the people, partnerships, and pathways that support Texas State’s innovation ecosystem.

AI is already changing how we age, from smart home sensors to virtual care visits. THRC's newest initiative, CARE-AI, a collaboration with the Center for Analytics and Data Science, explores what that means for older adults and their caregivers through three lenses: mobility and access to care, smart homes and environments, and digital health adoption.

Hear from Dr. Barbara Hewitt on how people adopt AI in health care, and Dr. Kristen Sussman on AI-powered social listening and engagement.

📅 September 30 | 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
📍 LBJ Student Center, Room 323

🎓 Meet the 2026–2027 ASPIRE Student Fellows! 💙

We kicked off a new year of ASPIRE at THRC with ASPIRE Match Day, celebrating a major milestone: all 29 members of our 2026–2027 cohort are officially matched with Texas State faculty research mentors! 🔬

Through ASPIRE, Student Fellows gain hands-on research experience while building the mentorship, skills, and professional connections that can help shape their next steps in STEM.

Hear from one of our new ASPIRE Student Fellows about what their match means to them, what they’re looking forward to, and why they’re excited to begin their ASPIRE experience.

Congratulations to our 29 new Student Fellows and the faculty mentors welcoming them into their research teams. We can’t wait to see where your research takes you! ✨

Nucleate Texas is bringing its Activator program to TXST with an Info Session on September 17. Nucleate is a free, equity-free accelerator that helps scientists and trainees turn research into early-stage biotech and ecotech ventures.

You don't need your own startup idea to join. Nucleate builds teams from three types of expertise:

🔬 Scientific — grad students, postdocs, and researchers with technical know-how
🩺 Clinical — trainees who bring healthcare or unmet-needs perspective
📈 Business — anyone interested in strategy, commercialization, or operations

Graduate students, postdocs, and research-active faculty across biotechnology, entrepreneurship, and the biosciences are encouraged to attend. First-year faculty can participate directly; senior faculty can join as team affiliates or partner with a trainee.

📍 Info Session: 2:00–4:00 PM, Ingram Hall 2001
📍 Networking Happy Hour: 4:30–6:30 PM, Zelicks Icehouse

Yesterday, the TexVet Legacy Project welcomed its student team for orientation.

The project preserves veteran stories while strengthening K-12 education across three focus areas: teacher resources, expansion of the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM), and community outreach. Over the life of the project, the team will produce 40 new veteran stories for the VLM, develop 13 Texas standards-aligned K-12 lesson plans, and train 20 teachers through a one-day Summer Institute, reaching thousands of K-12 and Texas State veteran and military-connected students each year.

Follow along as this team gets to work, and stay tuned to see how this project brings veteran stories into Texas classrooms.

Healthy Cats Peer Education speakers Alicia Rosas, MS, CHES® and Marisa Montelongo, M.S., CHES®, a student-led program at Texas State University that promotes health and wellness through peer education and prevention, presented to FESTA students on the foundations of public health. They explored upstream and downstream strategies and shared real-world examples of prevention in action.

On August 18th, THRC senior faculty fellow Dr. Kelly Clary addressed the Commissioners Court as they adopted a proclamation recognizing August 31st as International Overdose Awareness Day.

Overdose is preventable — and naloxone (Narcan) is one of the simplest tools we have to stop one. On 8/31, we'll be sharing some videos showing you exactly where to find it on the Texas State campus and how to use it in an emergency. Follow along so you're ready.

Today, you can learn more about the work being done by the FESTA (Fentanyl Education, Support Training, and Awareness) program here: https://festaprogram.wp.txstate.edu/
