College of Education - Savannah State University

College of Education - Savannah State University The College of Education team believes that our graduates "can teach anywhere from here" and we mentor our education students to succeed!

Teacher Education at Savannah State University has a long and rich history beginning with the founding of the institution in 1891, which educated students in liberal arts, the sciences, and mathematics to serve as professionals in the field of education for over 88 years. In 2013, Teacher Education was returned to Savannah State University after approval by the University System of Georgia‘s Board

of Regents and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission allowing us to return to the vision of founding president, Richard R. Wright, Sr., who both experienced and promoted the value of education throughout his inspirational lifeworks. The return of Teacher Education to SSU is cause for great celebration and opportunity for prospective and current students, as well as for those of us within the School of Teacher Education. We are poised for growth and expansion with a highly qualified and dedicated faculty and staff and with our current educator preparation programs focused on a much needed and high demand area for teachers—STEM Education. STEM refers to developing skills in the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The School of Teacher Education offers high quality, field-based educator preparation programs leading to teacher certification in one of three teacher certification areas: Mathematics (6-12), Biology (6-12), and Engineering and Technology (P-12). Students may choose to major in mathematics, biology, civil engineering, or electronics engineering with a concentration in education OR choose to declare education as their major to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) in one of these three certification areas—AND more programs are under development! The School of Teacher Education team believes that our graduates "can teach anywhere from here" and we mentor our education students to succeed! Students are engaged in their training through interactive, technology-enhanced classes using individualized advising and experiential learning opportunities that prepare SSU students to teach in a diverse and increasingly technological society. Our students have opportunities throughout their preparation to develop the skills and build the networks needed to attain teaching jobs upon graduation.
