Graduate students wrapped up their final OT 550 class with a theory-themed party yesterday! 🎤✨

Occupation-based theories are frameworks that help guide how we understand people, occupation, participation, and intervention. They shape the way OTs think, problem-solve, and provide client-centered care. Theory gives meaning and direction to practice and helps us and our clients understand why we do what we do.

This semester, graduate students learned theory beyond traditional Western models and explored OT theories from around the world 🌎 Because occupation, health, and independence are influenced by culture, values, environment, spirituality, and community, it’s important that future practitioners recognize that there is no one universal perspective of occupation. Learning about global OT theories challenged us to better understand the diverse experiences of the clients and communities we will serve 💜

A group of graduate students in Theory learned about the Kawa Model from creator Dr. Iwama himself, in order to prepare for a class project! They took what they learned to teach their classmates about the model and made a giant river together! Thank you Dr. Iwama for this unique opportunity!!

April is both National Occupational Therapy Month and National Deaf History Month 🤍

In The University of Scranton Occupational Therapy Department, we recognize the profound impact that being Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing can have on an individual’s life. Children who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing are not always afforded the same early sensory experiences, which can lead to delays in development and participation in meaningful occupations.

Families of children born without the ability to hear also face significant challenges, including navigating complex emotions while often lacking clear education and support from healthcare providers about the impact of hearing loss.

Our students have taken meaningful steps to support the Deaf community 🤍 Last semester, our juniors adapted toys and gifted them to the NEPA Choices for Children Toddler Group to promote accessible play. This year, our graduate students are raising money to provide a service dog for the Scranton School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

Many of our OT students are also enrolled in or have taken American Sign Language (ASL) to foster communication and inclusivity, and regularly sign at events including Mass and Christmas on the Commons.

As future occupational therapy practitioners, we are committed to advocating for early intervention, accessibility, and meaningful participation for all 🤟
