August is about getting organized without letting the college application process take over your senior year.

The Common App is open, but opening day isn’t a deadline. Use this month to understand your application plans and deadlines, make real progress on your personal statement, organize your activities and honors, and get a system in place for keeping track of everything.

One item students and families sometimes overlook: financial aid requirements can have their own deadlines. Add those dates to your application tracker now so they don’t become a last-minute surprise.

Most importantly, leave some room for senior year. A good plan should make the process feel more manageable, not consume every free minute you have.

Save this checklist and work through it one step at a time.

The Common App is open. That doesn’t mean applications need to be submitted today.

August is a time to make thoughtful progress: refine your college list, work on your essay, review supplemental requirements, and understand the deadlines that actually matter for your schools.

And remember, application deadlines aren’t the only dates to watch. Scholarship and financial aid deadlines can follow different timelines, so make sure those are part of your plan, too.

A strong application is worth taking the time to get right.

Your high school counselor is an important part of the college process. They support hundreds of students, manage schedules, write recommendations, and help keep everyone on track.

An independent educational consultant serves a different role.
My job is to get to know your student as an individual. We have the time to explore college options, build a balanced list, develop application strategies, review essays, answer questions as they come up, and support your family from the first conversation through the final decision.

Not knowing a major yet does not mean a student is behind. It usually means they are still learning about themselves, their interests, and the kind of environment where they may thrive. When the major is unclear, the college list can still be built with intention.

Look at flexibility, advising, academic support, career exploration, campus environment, and opportunities to try different paths.
