“My time at SPU was life-changing.”

Get to know Kristine Reeves, a former foster youth, first-generation college graduate, working mother, woman of color, state legislator, and Congressional candidate. Reeves received her doctorate in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from SPU this past Spring.

“I learned that government and community can be a force for good in the world,” she said. “Whether it was foster care, food assistance, or public-school educators who cared deeply about my health and well-being far beyond the classroom.”

Seattle Pacific faculty, staff, and student leaders and athletes gathered Thursday, Sept. 10, for the annual Opening Kickoff for a new academic year.

President Deana Porterfield reflected on the year ahead and introduced our key verse of the year: “Then they said, ‘Let us start building!’ So they committed themselves to the common good” (Nehemiah 2:18b, NRSVUE).

2026 marks not only the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence but also another anniversary — the 250th of America’s first constitution.

Today, September 17, is Constitution Day. Professor Emeritus of History Bill Woodward looks at what could be called America’s first declaration of independence — states launching their own constitutions to undermine British rule, many before July 4, 1776. At the same time, this burst of government-inventing was paralleled at the national level, with the first constitution for the new United States of America.
