Embraced by the beauty of the mountains he loved, Tyler Heilman died in a climbing accident on September 20, 2015. At age 22, Tyler had so much left to experience, yet he had already lived, learned and loved deeply. We will remember his intellectual courage and his authentic joy. And we will honor the way he threw his arms around the world and found absolute magic, energy, and love. Tyler thrived
at Quest University in British Columbia, where he studied climate science while enjoying the surrounding wilderness. With the aid of a summer fellowship and outstanding mentor relationship, Tyler designed and built the first weather station in the mountains of Garibaldi Provincial Park - an ongoing source of detailed data on weather conditions that will aid recreation safety, and over time will help calibrate weather forecasting models and contribute to better understanding of climate change. Jennifer and Jeff Heilman, along with Quest University, have established the Tyler Heilman Summer Fellowship Fund to honor the life of an amazing young man and to provide a legacy of learning and growth. This fund will support other remarkable students with opportunities to apply their education in a tangible way, grow intellectually and personally, and reinforce how idealism and good work can be manifest into real benefits for society and our planet. Because of the sudden nature of Tyler’s passing, his family and Quest University are still in the process of setting up his memorial fund on the website.
