On November 13, 1953, at the home of Margaret Jones Moore, Delta Uplison Sigma Chapter was born. The Regional Director at the time was Luclen James. Dorothy Height was the National President at the time the chapter was chartered. The name of the chapter was changed to Selma Alumnae in 1957. The charter members were Ruth Southhall Boyd, Eunice Burwell Gilford, Estella Wigfall, Irene Berry Williams,

Gloria Ridgeway Blanchette, Ann Moorer Boyd, and Margaret Jones Moore. The first officers were: Ann Moorer – President, Mavel Edwards – Vice President, Ruth Boyd – Recording Secretary, and Irene Berry – Corresponding Secretary. After the chapter was chartered, these ladies along with other Deltas who returned to the city or moved to the city to work after college went to do public service activities. One of the signature projects was the “Jabberwock.” This project was conducted annually and involved school children to showcase their talents and abilities. The roll of Presidents is as follows: Ann Moorer, Mabel Edwards, Ruby Hobowski Hayden, Louretta Wimberly, Ruth Boyd, Mary Williams, Yvonne Jones, Louise Mitchell, Joyce Nadine O’Neal, Penny Williams, Dorothy Brown, Pinkie Platt, Sadie Moss, Veronica Brown, Sherica Hatcher and presently, Eris J. Through the years, Selma Alumnae members were the forefront of community activities. They were active in the Civil and Voting Rights Movements. One charter member, Margaret Jones Moore was knocked down and nearly trampled on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on “Bloody Sunday.” On the bridge with her that fateful day was honorary member, Amelia Boynton Billups Robinson. Selma Alumnae was the first sorority in the city to have the Debutante Cotillion and the first to include young men. Many young men and women have received scholarships as a result of their participation in this worthwhile event. Only a few of the many projects sponsored by the chapter have been mentioned. Selma Alumnae Chapter continues to serve the community in many ways. The vision of the chapter members continues to grow through member contributions to society through their professions and their dedicated service to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. When the vision comes then so does the action. When the dreamer wakes up, then so does the dream. When the clarion call comes, then so we answer. When it is time to serve, then here we are. 🧠💚 Mental Health Matters! 💚🧠

As Mental Health Awareness Month
comes to a close, I must express my sincere gratitude to the dedicated sorors of the Selma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for planning and coordinating an outstanding Mental Health Summit right here in Selma, Alabama.

With approximately 40 participants in attendance, today's summit was filled with meaningful conversations, valuable resources, and powerful reminders about the importance of prioritizing mental wellness. From youth to adults, attendees were educated, uplifted, encouraged, and empowered by our phenomenal speakers who shared their expertise and personal insights.

Throughout the program, participants were reminded to:

✨ Acknowledge when their strength is running low.
✨ Show up for themselves in the doctor's office and in the therapist's office.
✨ Give themselves permission to release, reset, and rest when needed.
✨ Understand that while the cause of a mental health challenge may vary, seeking treatment and support is what truly matters.

A special thank you to our speakers, volunteers, community partners, and everyone who attended and contributed to this important conversation. Together, we are helping to break the stigma surrounding mental health and creating a stronger, healthier community.

Mental Health Awareness Month may be ending, but the work continues every day.

💚 Take care of your mind. Protect your peace. Seek help when needed. You are worth it.
