As a chapter, we are absolutely grieved upon hearing about this vile incident of hate speech that occurred at yesterday’s men’s lacrosse game, perpetuated by fellow Sewanee students. It is completely inexcusable, and we would like to make clear our intolerance of such hatred perpetuated by anyone, but especially by anyone from our own community.

No string of words is able to adequately address the magnitude of this situation or its implications, but we stand firmly in the hope that our actions as a university community going forward can do that, ensuring that another event like this does not ever come close to happening again. Racism and white supremacy are undoubtedly some of the most dangerous forces on this campus, and we denounce them entirely.

To the men’s lacrosse players of Emmanuel and the larger Emmanuel community: we offer you our deepest solidarity. We are so sorry, and we stand with you.

In solidarity,
The sisters of Kappa Delta Eta Epsilon

It is with regret that I must share with you the details of an inexcusable incident that occurred yesterday, the steps we are taking to help prevent this from happening again, and the request we are making for your assistance in identifying those responsible.

It is with unimaginable grief that we share that today, our sister Ava passed away in a tragic accident. She was a vision of light and someone whose deep kindness we all wanted to embody. She illuminated every space she entered. She appreciated every detail of the world around her, reminding us all of the beauty and light within it because of the love with which she viewed it. Her legacy lives on in the lives she changed with her own kindness and generosity, and especially with her unique ability to see and bring out the best in every person. Ava never met a stranger. She is an irreplaceable piece of all of our lives: her empathy, intentionality, and authenticity were unparalleled. She will always be a part of our circle.

AOT to our beautiful, radiant, and truly lovely Ava. We will miss you every single day but we will carry on the spirit of the magnificent person you were with every act of kindness and light going forward. We will remember you with every sunset we see, every moment of love we share, and every ray of light we feel. The pure goodness you embodied remains intangible. We love you forever.

“Kappa Delta sisters represent many backgrounds, races and cultures and yet we acknowledge that our membership is predominantly white with many members who benefit from white privilege. To our black sisters and to all of our sisters of color, most of us cannot begin to understand how you are feeling, but we see you, we value you, and we stand with you. Our sisterhood is stronger because of you, and we cannot stay silent about the injustices and discrimination you face because of the color of your skin.” - Statement from Kappa Delta Headquarters
We as an organization are outraged by and condemn the brutalization and mistreatment of people of color in this country. We truly believe that Black Lives Matter and in an effort to support this movement, we will be raising money for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. This fund is a legal organization with over 75 years of experience fighting for racial justice. Their main goal is to seek structural changes in our democracy through litigation, advocacy, and public education. Please consider joining us in donating to this organization fighting for change. We also ask you to please consider supporting other Sewanee Greek Life organizations in their efforts to raise money for groups working to support the Black Lives Matter Movement.

A message from our VP-Community Service: I am so proud to be a member of Kappa Delta who is nationally partnered with Prevent Child Abuse America! Getting to raise awareness and funds for such an important cause and organization has been the greatest pleasure. Helping to insure the safety and wellbeing of todays children and tomorrows adults is so incredibly important as well as awe inspiring. I wear blue today (and lots of days) in memory of the children who couldn’t escape it, in honor of the children we are currently fighting for, and to raise awareness about how to prevent child abuse. Kappa Delta...why do YOU wear blue??💙
