On 4/27/27, Shepherd University is serving as the regional host site for the Reagan Presidential Library High School Debate Series. We welcome any 9-12th grader(s) to take part in this civic discussion. Any interested students, clubs, or teachers can reach out to Dr. Allen [email protected] to be in the loop for upcoming trainings and information sessions.

Update on the Opening of the St. Paul’s Library from Dr. Johnson:

Exactly one week after the conference, on May 29, we met with teachers and students at St. Paul’s Primary and Junior School in Athi River Kenya for the opening of their library. During the conference, Keynote speaker, LeAnn Johnson, related her mother’s direction to her father on the day she was born, “Bring books not flowers.” Head librarian, Pauline Musembi, built on this statement as she told the other teams that their library was a baby waiting to be born and that they too ask, “Bring books, not flowers.”
In keeping with this thought, a unique feature of the opening ceremony was the singing of “Happy Birthday” to the library. Students helped unpack the more than 900 books that had been purchased with donations from well-wishers in the United States. A plaque with Dr. Seuss quote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” was mounted near the door of the library thanking the donors who made the library possible. While this baby is small at this point in time, the current books will be supplemented in July when they will receive approximately 450 more books from the USA. The 1200+ students attending St. Pauls are eager to begin reading.

Teachers are eager to work towards fulfilling the following goals: By November, 2026, 75% of learners should have:
Read at least 6 story books.
Language teachers should have embraced read aloud skills in class with learners once a week.

On May 22, Dr. LeAnn Johnson helped organize and present the first Literacy Leaders Conference – Kenya at the Mavoko SNP school in Mlongo, Kenya. The conference theme was “Creating a Culture of Reading”. As an outgrowth of Shepherd’s annual Literacy Leaders Conference and the “Feeding their Minds” school library project which is using a combination of donated books and funds to create a small school libraries where there have been no books, teachers and administrators from the participating schools shared the successes and challenges each have experienced.

This study abroad trip is connected to teaching history so we did A LOT of history in Stirling today. The students received a walking tour of the town in the morning and visited Stirling Castle during the afternoon. We also experienced the full brunt of Scottish weather while on the tour (did not stop us though!)

Our study abroad students spent the morning in Oxford attending a session comparing UK vs US higher education trends from the university’s Centre for Teaching and Learning. Then they received an awesome tour of Oxford the city & Oxford the University. Lots of Tudors, Harry Potter, famous authors, and a little bit of Paddington at the train station.

The EDUC 399 Study-Abroad course on Teaching History and Geography will be making their way to Oxford University tomorrow for an issues based discussion. Still, before visiting Oxford, the students took a red-eye flight to London and hit the ground running. They received a blue badge tour and took in the major highlights of the city- with dinner at The Champion pub to wrap up a great day!
