Kim Young for Sherwood City Council

Kim Young for Sherwood City Council Kim Young, Sherwood City Councilor Hi, my name is Kim Young and I am honored to be a City Councilor for the City of Sherwood.

A little about me: I have been married to my wonderful husband Scott for 27 years and we have two children. Our oldest is finishing grad school at San Francisco State and our youngest is beginning his 2nd year at Colorado School of Mines. Our family moved to Oregon 16 years ago after my husband retired from 22 years in the Navy. My husband has always loved the pacific northwest, so we packed up fr

om San Diego and headed to Oregon. Our children started attending school in Sherwood and we immediately fell in love with the community. Over the years our family has participated in many community activities including youth sports, Voices for the Performing Arts, Sherwood Foundation for the Arts, Robin Hood Festival, Onion Festival and Cruisin' Sherwood. It was my desire to be an active community member which led me to begin attending city council meetings the past few years. I believe being involved at the local level is one of the best ways to help make a difference in the community you live in,

As your city councilor I will listen to your concerns, encourage citizen input, and require transparency. It is important that the City Council communicate with our citizens on important topics.

I had the pleasure of attending this swearing in ceremony. We are so fortunate to be able to get lateral officers to our department. Prior experience is huge and gets them on the road with our department much sooner. Welcome to Sherwood.

Please help us welcome our two newest full time officers, Officer Salisbury and Officer Jang, who were recently sworn in by Chief Hanlon!

Both of them have prior law enforcement experience in Oregon and we are really excited to have them continue their career as part of our family. If you see them out and about, be sure to say hello!

This month I had the pleasure of writing the City Councilor article for the City Newsletter - The Archer. My article focuses on the importance of the partnership between the City of Sherwood, Oregon Government and the Sherwood Area Chamber of Commerce.

Had a great evening at the Public Safety Chaplaincy donor dinner. We heard stories from chaplains and the services they provide to first responders and their communities as well as stories from first responders and community members on the receiving end of the amazing support of these chaplains. We are fortunate here in Sherwood to have two amazing chaplains providing their support to our police officers and our community. Thank you Wilson Parrish and Joel White! You’re appreciated!

Sherwood didn’t become the community we love by accident. Decades ago, city leaders made deliberate choices about planning, development, and land use that helped create the sense of place we value today. Those decisions set a strong foundation and gave Sherwood its distinct character.

As a city councilor, I see our role as carrying that responsibility forward. The choices we make now will shape what Sherwood looks like for future generations. At a time when state actions increasingly limit local authority over development standards, housing decisions, and neighborhood design, we believed it was important to take steps to better safeguard local input. Measures 34-347 and 34-348 don’t address every challenge we face, but they do strengthen our ability to stand up for community-driven planning and ensure Sherwood continues to reflect the values of the people who live here.

Mayor Tim Rosener has written another great article providing more information and the importance of voting yes on these ballot measures:

Protect your right to shape Sherwood’s growth. Vote on January 13 to keep planning decisions in local hands, not Salem’s.
