This summer Dr. Ying Yang – Chair of the sociology and Anthropology department at Shippensburg University led the HPLDI Interns through a wonderful class titled Leadership is not a Title. Starting the class by looking back at our own leaders and identifying traits that make them stand out, the students dove into the difference between management and leadership. Through real life examples and study-based formulas. The students also had opportunities to test out these new skills with a variety of fun group activities.

Your personal brand starts long before you hand someone a résumé.

In Week 7 of the Hersheypark Leadership Development Internship, our student interns had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Michael Coolsen, Professor of Marketing at Shippensburg University .

Drawing on his background in both psychology and marketing, Dr. Coolsen challenged students to think beyond traditional networking and explore what it means to build an authentic personal brand.

Through interactive discussions, thoughtful self-reflection, and practical application, interns began developing strategies to differentiate themselves and make a lasting impression—sometimes in just a single interaction.

The session reinforced that a strong personal brand isn't just about what you say—it's about how you show up. Students walked away with valuable insights into:
✔️ The impact of body language
✔️ The power of active listening
✔️ Communicating a unique and authentic professional identity

A sincere thank you to Dr. Coolsen for helping our interns build the confidence and skills to stand out as emerging leaders.

Dr Robert Stephens, Professor of Management and Chair of the Management/Marketing/Entrepreneurship Department at Shippensburg University , led students in a Civility in the Workplace lesson, marking the halfway point of the Hersheypark Leadership Development Internship Program.

Students were encouraged to have brave conversations, lead with kindness, and help create inclusive work environments. Through engaging discussions and activities, students explored the value of civility and professionalism, developed strategies for fostering inclusive, positive work environments, and reflected on their own strengths and areas for growth.

Key takeaway: Creating a positive workplace culture starts with open communication and a willingness to understand others.

This week, students at the Hersheypark Leadership Development Internship Program participated in their second academic session, Discover You: CliftonStrengths™ Assessment and Discovery, led by Victoria Kerr, Executive Director of the Shippensburg University Career Center .

Interns discovered and developed a greater self-awareness through exploring individual leadership strengths. The CliftonStrengths ™ Assessment highlights talents across four leadership domains: Executing, Influencing, Relationship Building, and Strategic Thinking. This session helped students learn how to apply these strengths as they grow both personally and professionally.

We’re excited to continue following the students’ experiences and leadership development throughout the summer!
