University of Washington leads Saturday Restoration Work Parties in early 2015

Ashley Brandon, Breanne Ward, Garth Hockersmith, George Zhao, Kelly Broadlick, Tony Sharrah, and Scarlet Liu of the University of Washington Restoration Ecology Network (UW-REN) have spent autumn quarter submerged in preparation for the upcoming restoration work at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park. The team has been

coordinating with community partners, developing a site assessment, building planting and work plans, and finalizing a proposal for submission as a foundation to begin work on-site. The group has scheduled five work-party days that are open to the public. Minors are welcome to participate in restoration activities with an accompanying adult. The work-parties are all on Saturdays, run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and will take place rain or shine (please dress for the elements). Look for multiple dates listed in the February Newsletter! Restoration activities will range from invasive species removal (scotch broom & himalayan blackberry), slope stabilization and native planting. Volunteering on a restoration project is a good way to get more familiar with your local park (including the flora and fauna), meet new people and understand your local environment in a whole new way. We hope to see you out there; we’d love the help! Snacks, gloves, and tools will be provided on-site.
