Traditional masculinity may keep English-speaking men from studying new languages

"Trends show fewer boys and men learn foreign languages in countries in which English is the primary language, and, in some places such as China, girls are more motivated than boys to learn an additional tongue. In this commentary, Chaffee examines how masculinity may affect attitudes about the value of learning a language." What do you think?

Across the English-speaking world, boys tend to drop out of foreign language study as soon as it is not mandatory.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS! WE NEED YOUR INPUT!

The McCulloch Center is interested in finding ways to better support international students. We will be holding two focus groups to invite student input on what things they would like to see happen on campus or what activities currently happening could be better supported.

These focus groups will be from 5:00-6:00pm on the following dates:
Tuesday, February 12, 2019
Thursday, February 21, 2019

We are looking for 8-12 participants for each group. If you are interested in participating, please let me know by responding to [email protected] with which date you would like to attend. Because we have limited space it will be first come first serve. Food will be provided! If you cannot attend the focus groups but would still like to share your thoughts, you are welcome to reach to Bri Rhode by email, attend her office hours from 10-12 on Wednesdays, or make an appointment by calling 413-538-2072.

We hope to heard from you!

10/25/2018

The Spanish, Laninx and Latin American Studies departments are co-hosting a discussion on THE ORIGIN OF VIOLENCE IN BRAZIL: FROM SLAVERY TO BOLSONARO.

Luiz Amaral (Director of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at UMass)
Place: Ciruti 206
Time: 12:20 to 1:20

"No matter what happens on Sunday, Brazil is heading for a military intervention. The only remaining question is how it will take place. Civil liberties and the free press are under attack. The army Captain, who is the front runner in the presidential elections, is threatening major media outlets in the country, his son has already said that "it only takes a Corporal and a Private to close the Supreme Court” and the army General who is his vice-president candidate openly talks about military intervention in case the justice system does not act against corruption. Videos from different army officers are flooding the internet with threats, clearly stating that only the outcome where their candidate wins is acceptable and if the opposition, center-left candidate has the majority of the votes it will be the result of electoral fraud, which in turn justifies a military intervention. The sad note to this expected catastrophe is that Brazilian history is full of episodes similar to this one and a complete lack of historical memory together with the Latin American ethos of the ”strong man” will lead the country once again into this dark path. In this talk, we will discuss current events in Brazil and will take a quick look at its history of violence and democracy from colonial times to today with a special focus on how the collective memory in Brazil tends to underplay the role of oppressive regimes that took place in the 20th century, from the Estado Novo (1937-1945) to the Military Dictatorship (1964-1985)."

Come check it out! There will be food and lots of good information.
