Throwback Thursday to one of Wittenberg’s standout offensive linemen

Aaron Shaffer was a dominant force on the Tigers’ offensive line, earning four letters and three years as a starting offensive tackle during his Wittenberg career.

A Greenville, Ohio, native and 1995 Greenville High School graduate, Shaffer was already an accomplished lineman before arriving at Wittenberg. He was a team captain, 2x GMVC All-League selection, and Second-Team All-Ohio honoree as a senior.

Shaffer continued that success in the Red & White, earning 2x All-NCAC honors and 2x NCAA Division III All-America recognition. He graduated from Wittenberg in 2000 and went on to build a career in football coaching, including stops at Wittenberg, Springfield South, Fairborn, and Greenville.

Shaffer returned to his hometown school as Greenville’s head football coach from 2012-18 before transitioning into athletic administration. He currently serves as Athletic Director at Greenville High School, continuing to make an impact on student-athletes and the community.

From All-American tackle to coach and athletic director, Shaffer has continued to leave his mark on the game long after his playing days.

Throwback Thursday to one of the most dominant running backs in Wittenberg history

Jon Warga was a record-setting running back who left an unforgettable mark on Tiger football during his four seasons from 1987-90.

A Columbus, Ohio, native and 1986 Northridge High School graduate, Warga was already a record-setter before arriving at Wittenberg. He held Northridge records for single-game, single-season and career rushing, as well as single-season and career receiving.

Warga continued that dominance in the Red & White, rushing for 3,250 yards and 28 touchdowns in just 31 games. He finished fourth on Wittenberg’s all-time career rushing list while also ranking among the program’s leaders in total offense and scoring.

His 1990 season was historic. Warga led the nation in NCAA Division III with 1,836 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 254 carries, averaging a school-record 7.2 yards per carry. He recorded six games with 200+ rushing yards, and his season total ranked second in NCAA Division III history at the time. He earned All-America honors and was named the Tigers’ Offensive Player of the Year.

Warga was inducted posthumously into the Wittenberg Athletics Hall of Honor in 2004. He passed away in 2001 at the age of 32.
