Whether it has been five years or 50 years since graduation, Med Reunion is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with classmates, revisit SLU and celebrate the friendships, experiences and shared commitment to medicine that began here.

A groundbreaking structural discovery led by researchers at Saint Louis University School of Medicine is advancing scientific understanding of how microbes regulate nitrogen fixation.

Under the leadership of Saint Louis University principal investigator Edwin Antony, Ph.D., postdoc Rajnandani Kashyap, Ph.D. and the team in the SLU Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology isolated and purified the nitrogenase protein complex and used high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy to capture its native structure. Their work revealed a previously unknown nitrogenase supercomplex that challenges long-standing assumptions about how this essential enzyme is regulated. The multi-institutional study was conducted in collaboration with researchers at the University of Arkansas and has been published in Nature.

The findings could help inform future advances in sustainable agriculture, biotechnology and green energy while demonstrating the impact of SLU’s investment in advanced research infrastructure and scientific talent.

The 4th Annual Gwendolyn Peiper Endowment for Music in Medicine Concert is in TWO WEEKS! 🎹

Celebrate the healing power of music at the Gwendolyn Peiper Endowment for Music in Medicine Concert on Thursday, Oct. 22. Presented by Saint Louis University School of Medicine and the Saint Louis University Visual and Performing Arts Department music program, the evening will celebrate the connection between music, wellness and community.

About the Program
Featuring performances by talented SLU undergraduate and School of Medicine student pianists, this complimentary annual concert was established through the generosity of Stephen C. Peiper, M.D. (Med '77), and Zoe Wang, Ph.D., to honor the memory of Dr. Peiper's mother, Gwendolyn Peiper, a beloved St. Louis piano teacher.

Fall Fest at SLU SOM 🍁: On Wednesday, Sept. 30, Q***r Medical Alliance (QMA) and the Medical Student Government (MSG) Service Committee teamed up to host Fall Fest: a farmer’s market-style event featuring medical student vendors who fundraised for numerous local organizations by selling handmade goods, art, and gently-used clothing items.

In addition to QMA & MSG Service Committee, participating medical student groups included Student National Medical Association (Saint Louis University SNMA), the Arts in Medicine Distinction, Gardening Interest Group (SLUSOM Gardening IG), Palestinian American Medical Association (PAMA at Saint Louis University), M2 Social Committee (SLUSOM Class of 2029), and the SLU SOM Health Protection and Education Service group. Funds raised at the event benefited non-profit organizations such as The SPOT Youth Center, the Adopt-A-Family program, Heal Palestine, Health Protection and Education Service of St. Louis, and Seed STL.

The event included a performance by The Amygdalas (the_amygdalaas), a medical student band composed of Sophia Azim, Sachi Sharma, Joey Turner, and Shruthi Venkatachalam who create their own spins on popular music, covering artists ranging from Madonna to Noah Kahan.

Together, students raised a grand total of over $1,000 at Fall Fest!

Saint Louis University School of Medicine congratulates Dr. Daniela Salvemini on receiving a five-year, $2.9 million NIH/National Cancer Institute R01 grant to advance research on cancer therapy-induced cognitive impairment.

As William Beaumont Professor and Chair of Pharmacology and Physiology and Director of the SLU Institute for Translational Neuroscience, Dr. Salvemini will lead the project, “Discovery of a Novel Target to Mitigate Cancer Therapy-Induced Neurocognitive Impairments.” This groundbreaking work aims to improve the quality of life for cancer survivors by addressing the cognitive challenges that can accompany cancer treatment.

This award reflects Dr. Salvemini's continued leadership in translational neuroscience and Saint Louis University School of Medicine's commitment to research that improves lives.

SLU School of Medicine hosted the Spotlight on Women and Medicine Symposium on September 12, 2026 at Il Monastero. The symposium brought together faculty, staff, residents and students for roundtable discussion and workshops pertaining to "Poised to Lead: Advancing in Academic Medicine". Maria Quintos Baggstrom, MD, Professor, Division of Oncology, Washington University School of Medicine, Matt Broom, MD, VP and Chief Medical Officer, BJC Medical group, Stephanie Duggan, MD, Chief Clinical Officer, SSM Health, Erick Messias, MD, PhD, Chair, Department of Psychiatry, SLU School of Medicine, and Christine Jacobs, MD, Dean, SLU School of Medicine, spoke on the keynote Leadership panel at the event. The symposium was attended by over 70 members from SLU SOM, SSM Health and Washington University School of Medicine.

Congratulations to Jaclyn Whalen, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and member of Dr. Angel Baldan's lab, on receiving the Early Career Investigator Travel Award.

The award recognizes outstanding research in lipid and lipoprotein science and provided support for Jaclyn to attend the Kern Lipid Conference in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Jaclyn's research explores age-related differences in atherosclerosis development. At the conference, she connected with leading researchers, learned about the latest advances in the field, and expanded her professional network. This recognition highlights her dedication to research and contributions to advancing our understanding of cardiovascular disease.
