Dolly Parton, the songwriter and performer who turned a childhood in the Tennessee mountains into six decades of country music stardom, died Tuesday in Nashville.

Parton made her feature film debut in “9 to 5” (1980), starring alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and directed by Colin Higgins, ’63. Higgins studied creative writing on the Farm before heading to Hollywood, where he also wrote “Harold and Maude” and directed “Foul Play.” Two years later, he and Parton reunited for “The Best Little Wh******se in Texas.”

Today, we remember Dolly, and the storyteller who helped bring two of her most memorable performances to the screen.

When Marcus Lintott, '25, MS '25, applied to the Disney College Program during his senior year, he didn’t expect a little piece of Stanford to follow him to Walt Disney World.

Disney cast member nametags typically feature their hometowns. But because Marcus applied while he was still a Stanford student, his reads: Stanford University.

“It honestly made me feel less sad that I’m not at Stanford anymore.”

Landing at Disney carried another kind of meaning.

“It felt unimaginable, honestly. Working for Disney has always been the dream, especially at the parks. If younger me could see me now, I think they would be ecstatic. I was honestly trying to hold back ugly, joyful tears. 😁”

There were days growing up when Aliya Alsafa ( Aliya Alsafa ), ’26, practiced piano 10 hours per day. The commitment led her to Julliard’s precollege program, the Lang Lang Young Scholars Program, and to stages around the world. But when it came time to choose between college and conservatory, she chose Stanford.

Now the computer science major is embarking on a CS master’s program focusing on AI. But piano has remained a key part of her life: She co-founded the Stanford Keyboard Studies Committee, for piano students, and the Stanford Piano Society, for fans; she has also continued to play. “None of it is pressured or expected,” she says. “That’s probably the healthiest relationship with music that I’ve ever had.”
