“I’ve just never been one to avert my eyes.”

This mindset has shaped Stanford creative writing professor Adam Johnson’s career, from his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Orphan Master’s Son," set inside North Korea, to his latest 736-page epic, "The Wayfinder."

Inspired by generations of family storytellers and years spent researching Polynesian history, language, and oral tradition, Johnson’s fiction explores hidden lives, trauma, survival, and the stories people pass down to make sense of the world.

In June 2016, Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for $26.2 billion, the largest acquisition in the company’s history at that time.

Reid Hoffman, ’89, co-founded LinkedIn in 2003. At a time when much of the internet revolved around screen names and online personas, LinkedIn asked people to use their real names, share their professional experience, and connect through work.

By the time Microsoft announced its acquisition, LinkedIn had grown to more than 400 million members worldwide and had become a central tool for recruiting, hiring, and professional networking.

Peter Bing, ’55, a devoted Stanford volunteer, philanthropist, and trustee whose impact can be felt across campus and around the world, passed away on June 10 at the age of 91.

Over six decades of service, Bing helped shape generations of Stanford students through transformative support for undergraduate education, global learning, the arts, and public service. Alongside his wife, Helen, he helped establish programs and places that have become woven into the Stanford experience, including Bing Overseas Studies, Bing Stanford in Washington, and Bing Concert Hall.

As Stanford President Jonathan Levin, ’94, reflected, “The university owes a great deal to his vision and leadership, which helped shape nearly every corner of our campus and extended Stanford’s impact far beyond.”

We extend our deepest condolences to Helen Bing, their family, and all who knew him.

“D'Angelo was at once the sound of Summer 1995, the sound of Hip Hop mixed with the 70s, 60s and 50s--even bygone eras long before--instantly making him the future of R&B/Soul/Funk.”

Nearly a year after the death of D’Angelo, his music continues to resonate deeply across generations of listeners.

For "Dr. Wes" (Wesley J. Watkins IV, ’97) that connection traces back to his years at Stanford, where he studied African and African American Studies and began exploring how music shapes culture, identity, and collective understanding. Those ideas eventually became The Jazz & Democracy Project®, which uses jazz to teach concepts like freedom, teamwork, and civic participation, and was recently featured by STANFORD mag.

Now, Watkins brings that same lens to “Remember the Sound: On the Feeling of D’Angelo,” a multimedia presentation at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in downtown San Francisco on July 2, exploring the roots, rhythm, and emotional power behind D’Angelo’s sound.
