Taube Center for Jewish Studies

Taube Center for Jewish Studies Welcome to the official page of the Taube Center for Jewish Studies at Stanford University The Taube Center is committed to sharing the best of Jewish Studies research and artistic creativity with its students and the larger community.

Our lectures and programs cover the breath of Jewish experience, from biblical archaeology and the Talmud to contemporary popular culture and current events. Many feature renowned scholars, creative writers and artists; others introduce minds that are up-and-coming. Unless indicated otherwise, all our events are free and open to the public (with free parking on campus after 4 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends). In an effort to reach into the community, we've also arranged for a few events to be off campus, organized in collaboration with partner institutions. Learning should be a life-long experience. We invite you to deepen your understanding of the Jews and their culture, or to challenge yourself intellectually if Jewish Studies is new to you, by joining us for an enriching year of ideas and creative expression. We are thankful to the supporters who have made these opportunities possible.

Join us on February 8 for a fascinating evening as Stanford professor Steven Zipperstein and Hunter College professor Leah Garrett discuss the life of Philip Roth and Zipperstein’s journey on beginning a biography. Roth is one of the world's most highly regarded and awarded American writers of his generation, if not one of the most controversial America novelists. The biographical study is based on extensive archival research, interviews with close friends and others, as well as conversations with Roth himself over the course of several years.

Introducing Primary Source

Great new things are happening at the Taube Center!

“Primary Source is a podcast about the history and ideas behind some of the most significant texts in the field of Jewish Studies. In each episode, we deconstruct a major cultural or religious touchstone at the forefront of modern Jewish identity and practice, diving into the most bewildering, amusing, and misunderstood sides of texts you thought you knew everything about. We speak with scholars, writers, artists, and curators about the meanings and mysteries behind cherished (and not-so-cherished) Jewish texts.”
