We learned so much during last week's Dirac Lectures!

Our lineup of expert speakers included Henriette Elvang (University of Michigan), Gerald Gabrielse (Northwestern University) and Shinsei Ryu (Princeton University).

The 2026 Dirac Lectures celebrated the 100th anniversary of Paul Dirac's doctoral dissertation, titled “Quantum Mechanics.” Dirac, who co-founded the quantum mechanics field and predicted the existence of antimatter, won the 1933 Nobel Prize in Physics and served as a professor in the FSU Department of Physics.

: The Dirac Science Library on Florida State University's campus is dedicated to Dirac and features a statue of his likeness near the front entrance.

Thanks to the transistor — what many physicists believe to be the most important invention of the 20th century — we carry high-powered devices in our pockets that would have been considered supercomputers just 30 years ago. 🤳

The transistor's creation stemmed from analyzing a material’s electronic properties and learning how to control them — things that Florida State University condensed-matter theorist Cyprian Lewandowski does every day.

To learn more about Lewandowski's cutting-edge research in the FSU Department of Physics, check out the full article in the FSU College of Arts & Sciences' Spectrum Magazine: fla.st/IXIKFGOZ.
