From September 15 to October 15 each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, histories, traditions and cultural diversity of Hispanic/Latino/Latinx Americans whose heritage is rooted in Latin American countries and territories.

The 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month Observance Theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” The theme encourages us to ensure that all voices are represented and welcomed to help build stronger communities and a stronger nation.

Why Latinx?

The term “Hispanic” emerged from the U.S. Census Bureau advisory board created by President Richard Nixon. This is a reference to a person who is from, or a descendant of someone who is from, a Spanish-speaking country. This federal definition has become a standard way to define a very diverse, multilingual group of people.

Activists and scholars deem it an imposed and misguided blanket term when considering the complex identities within Latinx communities. Some individuals prefer to identify as “Latina/o” as it refers to a person who is from, or a descendant of someone who is from, a Latin American country.

The Spanish language is gendered; the male term is the default term to address a group of people. “Latinx” is an expansion on the term “Latino” to be a gender-inclusive descriptor of identity.

Today we remember the 2,996 Americans who lost their lives on this day, 21 years ago.
We also honor the heroes who protected our country following the tragedy and those that continue to do so today.
Thank you for your bravery and sacrifice‼️ We will never forget.

Every year in June, we celebrate Pride Month as a testament to the progress that has been made in the fight against bigotry and discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community. 🏳️‍🌈 It’s important that we educate ourselves on the multifaceted identities that live within our societies. Being aware of the intersectional experiences and history of the LGBTQIA+ community can help everyone become better allies to the cause. Support the right to love and exist as you please! It’s a human right! 🌈 #ΛΣΥ

Today we would like to recognize one of our most recent graduates at the Ciguayo Chapter:

Nadesh Barrett - Bachelors of Art in Computer Design

Our brother Nadesh is a man of man accolades and accomplishments since his time as an undergrad. His accomplishments include Order of Omega Inductee, Cum Laude, and a FIRST GENERATION College graduate. We are also proud to congratulate him on his position as an Elementary School Teacher in NYC in the upcoming fall. From being a first in the family to accomplish this feat, to now being an educator to future leaders, we thank you for your amazing accomplishments of Academic Excellence and the success you will have in the future 📚

Juan-Lorenzo Martinez - Master’s of Science Degree in Computer Science

Our brother Lorenzo has contributed many things to the University and his school since his time as an undergrad. Most recently, he served as the Graduate Hall Director during the past year. We are proud to also congratulate him on receiving a position at Princeton University as a Student Housing Occupancy Management Coordinator. We know you will do amazing things in the future and thank you for showing Academic Excellence at its finest 📚
