Meet our Open Textbook Grant awardees for 2019/2020. These faculty members are paving the way for OER at Washburn. We asked them, how has switching to open resources helped your students?

Brian Thomas - Professor, Physics/Astronomy
“Using open resources has helped me develop engaging content that improves students’ experience in my online class, while not adding to their materials costs.”

Dennis Etzel Jr. - Sr. Lecturer, English
“Using open resources has helped my students because the textbooks are always online, have wonderful information designed many times by professors in academia, and has financially relieved students. Of course, not all classes could benefit from OER, but those that can should have OER. This is an area of class-awareness for me, too.”

Ashley Maxwell - Lecturer, Sociology/Anthropology
“Open resources have allowed my students to have direct access to information from the first day of class. It eliminates the stress of ordering and also not receiving textbooks on time during the course (at times it has taken students 3 weeks to get their books). In addition, these resources save students money, which can eliminate issues of income inequity in the classroom.”

Mike Russell - Professor, Psychology
“Providing open resources is an outstanding means by which students are capable of learning course information without having to deal with the stress associated with purchasing an expensive textbook”

Madeline Eschenburg - Lecturer, Art
“Beyond saving money on expensive art history textbooks, switching to open resources has allowed me to incorporate more readings on how the history of art relates to current issues and events affecting our world today. It has also allowed me to include a variety of online media, like videos, PowerPoints, and online exhibitions. I have observed that the students are more engaged with this material and more readily reference it in course discussions than when I only assigned readings from the textbook. “

Meet our Open Access Librarian Amanda Luke!

“Open Access (OA) and Open Educational Resources (OER) are “teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under and intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others” (William and Flora Hewitt Foundation). These resources offer faculty the opportunity to transform the classes they teach while increasing student success. One way Mabee Library is supporting our faculty making a transition to OER is through the Open Textbook Grant (https://libguides.washburn.edu/open/otg).” #OAWeek
