The Yellow Poinciana, or Copperpod, scientifically known as Peltophorum pterocarpum, is an upright, semi-evergreen tree known for its striking appearance and vibrant yellow blossoms. This handsome tree features a spreading form with a rounded canopy, capable of reaching heights up to 50 feet and spreading between 30 to 50 feet. While individual tree forms can vary, proper training and pruning in both nursery and landscape settings can result in a more uniform crown.

Foliage: The Yellow Poinciana showcases delicate, feathery leaflets in a rich dark green. These leaves provide an elegant contrast to the tree's large size and contribute to the creation of welcoming, dappled shade.

Flowering Season: From May through September, the tree bursts into a breathtaking display, blanketing its entire canopy with a profusion of cheerful yellow flowers.

Landscape Use: The Yellow Poinciana serves as an excellent choice for landscaping projects where a bold, visually striking focal point is desired. It can be used as a standalone specimen tree or incorporated into a larger landscape design.

DROUGHT TOLERANCE: Tolerant once established in Florida.

Vitex agnus-castus ‘Shoal Creek’

A fast-growing flowering shrub or small tree prized for its large violet-blue flower spikes. ‘Shoal Creek’ is an improved cultivar with larger, deeper-colored blooms and better leaf-spot resistance than typical chaste trees.

• Plant type: Deciduous large shrub or small tree
• Mature size: Approximately 10–15 feet tall and 12–20 feet wide
• Growth rate: Fast
• Growth habit: Broad, spreading and naturally multi-trunked
• USDA zones: Approximately 7b–11; very well suited to Central Florida
• Light: Full sun for the heaviest flowering; tolerates partial shade
• Bloom season: Late spring through fall, with the strongest display in early summer
• Flower color: Rich violet-blue to purple
• Flower size: Large upright spikes that may reach approximately 12 inches
• Foliage: Aromatic, gray-green, palmately compound leaves
• Water needs: Moderate while establishing; highly drought tolerant afterward

Central Florida performance
‘Shoal Creek’ handles Florida heat extremely well and provides color when relatively few small trees are flowering. It is deciduous and may lose most or all of its leaves after cold weather, but it normally leafs out quickly in spring. Avoid wet, poorly drained locations because excessive moisture can cause root rot or dieback.

Bixa orellana, commonly known as Achiote, Annatto, or Lipstick Tree, is a tropical shrub or small tree native to Central and South America. It is cultivated for its spiny, heart-shaped seed pods, which contain bright red seeds rich in natural pigments. These seeds are the source of annatto, a natural food coloring and spice used in cheeses, rice dishes, and cosmetics. In addition to its culinary uses, Bixa is valued as a fast-growing ornamental plant with attractive pink flowers and striking seed capsules.
