We mourn this week the passing of Brian Wilson at the age of 82. Wilson was the co-founder and visionary force behind the Beach Boys, one of the twentieth century’s most popular and influential bands. Wilson’s strikingly original songs helped define the sound of the 1960s and left an indelible mark on American music. To understand this innovative artist’s songs, redemption and legacy, KCRW (and the BBC, and the New York Times) turned to his biographer David Leaf, adjunct professor of music industry and musicology at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
