The world has changed a lot since Br. Thomas Jones, FSC first came to Saint Mary’s as a student in 1965.

But some things remain the same across the decades.

Br. Thomas still sees a place where students are known and supported by their professors, learn from other people’s experiences, and discover that they have something valuable to contribute to their communities.

As he puts it: “Here, students know they matter.”❤️💙

100 years ago today, the Gaels got their name. ☘️

Two days after Saint Mary’s defeated Cal, 26–7, a sportswriter gave the team a playful nickname that would stick for a century.

Writer Pat Frayne called the team the “Galloping Gaels” in his game recap. He was Impressed by the speed and running prowess of Saint Mary’s players, many of whom were Irish-Americans, like much of the student body. That was October 11, 1926 in the “San Francisco Call and Post.”

At the time, the team was still known as the Saints. But the new nickname caught on.

The Gael, an Irish warrior, soon became the mascot and moniker for all Saint Mary’s athletic teams. Coach Slip Madigan made it official the next season.

A historic game. One memorable nickname. An identity that has lasted a century and counting.

We are never more proud to be the Gaels! ❤️💙

100 years ago today, Saint Mary’s defeated Cal, 26–7, in a highly anticipated matchup. 🏈

A crowd of 67,000 packed California Memorial Stadium to witness a momentous Saint Mary's victory. It was the football program’s first win over its neighbor in generations and a milestone in what would become an undefeated season.

But the most remarkable part of this game happened two days later…

Look for the rest of this story on Sunday.

A new chapter in nursing education at Saint Mary’s!

This week, we celebrated the new Phelan Simulation Lab, home of Saint Mary’s new nursing program.

This is a space unlike anywhere else on campus.

Made possible by lead donors Elizabeth Phelan ’92 and Jeff Phelan, the lab gives Gaels a place to build skills through hands-on training. Simulation rooms and lifelike mannequins allow students to practice nursing and health sciences in a realistic environment.

We’ll take a deeper look inside the Phelan Simulation Lab soon. For now, we’re celebrating this milestone and thanking Liz and Jeff Phelan, along with all of the donors who helped make this space possible.

Most of all, we celebrate what it means for students. Saint Mary's students will learn, practice, and prepare for their careers in this space for decades to come.

Here’s to the next generation of Gael nurses! 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

With heavy hearts, we share the news that Professor Emeritus Norman “Norm” Bedford passed away on September 3.

Norm taught at Saint Mary’s for 35 years in the School of Economics and Business Administration, before retiring in 2018. He loved teaching and, especially, the company of his students. Many sought him out beyond the classroom simply to talk. Norm had a warm and generous presence and took a genuine interest in the lives of others.

Even after retirement, Norm remained closely connected to Saint Mary’s and to the students and colleagues who meant so much to him. In a recent Gael Glimpse, he shared that he continued to keep in touch with many of his former students and enjoyed following their careers, stayed connected with colleagues around the world, and remained engaged with news and events at Saint Mary’s.

“Go Gaels!! You will remain in my heart, and spirit, forever.”

We extend our condolences to Norm’s family, friends, colleagues, former students, and all who knew him. May his memory remain a blessing to the Saint Mary’s community.
