Here are two photos from Tennessee’s recent annual governor’s environmental stewardship awards. The photo on the left is pretty cool to us because it includes three Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) employees that we previously taught and advised in our Lipscomb sustainability academic program, and a fourth Lipscomb alumnus who earned her education degree and also works at TDEC. The second photo represents alumni of lifetime achievement awards, including the 2026 recipient, former Governor, U.S. Senator, and former University of Tennessee president, Lamar Alexander. Senator/Governor Alexander gave the distinct honor of accepting his award to Michael Butler of the infamous Tennessee Wildlife Federation. What an honor and privilege it was for our director to be in the presence of, and to feel the energy of, such a diverse group of past and future conservation and sustainability leaders.

Is thriving in ? The American Accounting Association's annual global conference, wrapping up TODAY with 3,000+ attendees, has integrated sustainability into its agenda this year, after three prior stand-alone annual events. On Sunday, the AAA held a pre-conference sustainability workshop PLUS 18 individual sessions, Monday through Thursday, focusing mostly on but also climate risk/reporting, net-zero pledges, sustainable water use, and others. Our graduate sustainability metrics instructor, Susan Coomer Galbreath, Ph.D., CPA, FSA, presented twice on teaching, learning, and undergraduate student success. Thank you, University College of Business and Lipscomb University College of Leadership & Public Service, for allowing us to attend.

Day 1 of Advanced Sustainability Study in New England began with thunderstorms and floods in Nashville that delayed 75% of our flights to Boston. However, due to good plane reservation timing, fall back flights could be rebooked or left late but early enough to get 18 people to Concord, MA by planes, trains, and automobiles, just in time for dinner. Day 2 began with inspiration from conservation efforts at Walden Pond; financial success at Verrill Farms, literary wisdom at Ralph Waldo Emerson’s home; 10,000 to 251 years of geological and American history at the Concord Museum; and FUN kayaking on the same Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord Rivers that Native Americans and Henry David Thoreau knew first! Day 3 begins tomorrow!

Are there sustainability jobs in Middle Tennessee? YES!! Out of 4.000+ posted in the United States TODAY, the first five on the list below reside or can be located in Middle Tennessee. We are very proud of Anna Kate Armstrong’s dedication to ALL of our world, nature and people, and her effort to continue to raise the bar in her studies and her excellent research of best local, urban, conservation practices in two Tennessee communities. We don’t think we have ever seen a graduate student push herself so hard to improve, challenge herself, and grow in such a short time through so many life changes. Her family is obviously one source of her resilience and intelligence, but Anna Kate is the one who made it work for her career and life. We are blessed to know her. Hire her fast before she gets away; your organization will not regret it. Read more about her special family below.

Commencement is a time of celebration of academic achievement and the accomplishment of personal goals. For one family, Lipscomb University’s May commencement was a time to celebrate two milestones.
