DINING IN!
This past weekend, the consortium had their annual Dining In celebration. This tradition fosters the morale and sense of unity within the midshipmen through a good balance of professionalism, laughs, and fun! The night was sure to bring about many long lasting memories. This past week our Midshipmen had the opportunity to go to Marine Corps Base Quantico for marine options to prepare for FMF and OCS and for navy options to gain experience of ground operations. Additionally, our midshipmen traveled to the United States Naval Academy to participate in ship handling exercises on their COVE simulators!

This past week our midshipmen had an SDB inspection and then had the opportunity to hear from CDR Scott, the commanding officer of the USS Nebraska (SSBN-739), about the mission and importance of the United States Navy’s submarine force. Additionally, some of our midshipmen attended the Sea Air Space Conference and Exposition! They were exposed to different modern warfare and technology, such as VR trainers, and had the opportunity to meet retired MCPON West!

It’s Firstie Friday! This week we will be highlighting MIDN 1/C Cornett!

MIDN Cornett is from Gretna, Nebraska, majoring in Aerospace Engineering, and service selected Naval Aviator!
MIDN Cornett’s hobbies include playing basketball and soccer, running, and golfing. His favorite NROTC memory was beating Air Force and Army in the Armory Cup every year. He is looking forward to starting flight school and meeting great people across the fleet!

This past weekend UMD and UMBC midshipmen participated in the Ohio State Military Excellence Competition! They participated in many different events including drill, an endurance race, powerlifting, rifle and pistol, and tug of war. Amazing effort put in by all who attended!

Happy Firstie Friday! This week we have MIDN 1/C Halsall!

MIDN Halsall is from Middletown, New Jersey and majoring in Arabic Studies. She service selected SWO and will be reporting to her first ship the USS Benfold out of Everett, Washington.
MIDN Halsall’s hobbies include studying languages, traveling, rock climbing, reading, and petting animals. Her favorite NROTC memory was her OCONUS SWO cruise starting in Spain, going up to the arctic, and then ending in Estonia. Her plans for after commissioning include attending a Metallica concert, then moving to the west coast and starting her SWO career!

This past weekend the Devil Dog club visited the Arlington National Cemetery with MIDN from where they were able to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and changing of the guard ceremony. They then walked to the US Marine Corps War Memorial! Additionally, the SpecWar Club conducted a paintball FEX! There was amazing turnout to both events and our MIDN got to have some new and fun experiences.

Happy First Friday! This week we will be highlighting our very own BCO, MIDN 1/C Smoot!

MIDN Smoot is from Bowie, Maryland and majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice. She service selected SWO and selected LPD 19 USS Mesa Verde out of Norfolk, VA as her first ship!
MIDN Smoot’s hobbies include running, hiking, and spending time with her cat. Her favorite NROTC memory was her 2/C cruise where she had the chance to be on a Minesweeper in Manama, Bahrain. She’s looking forward to starting her career as a naval officer and gaining new experience, meeting new people, and traveling to new places!

This morning our MIDN conducted a CFT (Combat Fitness Test) inspired workout for Battalion PT! With their squads, they rotated around 8 stations corresponding with different aspects of the CFT, including buddy drags, fireman carries, bear crawls, push-ups and more.

MIDN McQuagge is from Colts Neck, New Jersey and majoring in Information Science. He service selected Surface Warfare and recently selected his first ship, LPD 17 USS San Antonio! In his free time, he enjoys nature, reading, lifting, and playing basketball.
MIDN McQuagge’s favorite NROTC memory is when Middripmen (our unit’s intramural basketball team) won the basketball championship! After commissioning, he is excited to travel, explore new places, and sail the seas!

Happy Firstie Friday! This week we will be highlighting MIDN 1/C Jeong.

MIDN Jeong is from Frederick, Maryland, majoring in Information Science and service selected Surface Warfare! In his free time, he likes to work out, run, and play basketball.
MIDN Jeong’s favorite NROTC memories are when MIDN 1/C Carmichael sang the Marine Corps Hymn at New Student Orientation and winning the armory cup. After commissioning, he will attend Basic Division Officers Course in San Diego and then start on his first ship, the USS Pinckney (DDG 91). He is excited to learn new skills and lead his future sailors!
