Nebraska's associate professor Clemencia Rojas will present “Harnessing Environmental Bacteria in the Development of Biopesticides to Control Plant Diseases: The Case of Bacterial Panicle Blight of Rice.” Rojas’ research examines antimicrobial molecules produced by Pseudomonas protegens PBL3 and how they could be harnessed to develop biopesticides for controlling bacterial diseases in crops. Note: This video presentation will not be posted following the seminar.

Join Nebraska Extension for an Irrigated Summer Forage Plot Tour near Mullen on Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. MT!

The tour will take a closer look at a pearl millet field study evaluating five potassium rates, as well as w**d control trials using pre- and postemergence herbicide options for pearl millet.

The plot tour will be located 10.3 miles south of Mullen at the pivot on the west side of Highway 97.

🦬💦 BISON & WATERFALLS — Fall Break on the Niobrara! 🌾🛶

Looking for a Fall Break experience that takes learning outside the classroom? Bison & Waterfalls gives students the opportunity to spend three full days at The Nature Conservancy’s Niobrara Valley Preserve, exploring the Niobrara River and surrounding landscape through three different lenses: conservation, recreation, and ranching.

📅 October 16–20, 2026
🎓 1-credit NRES 493 course
👥 Limited to just 12 students!

During the trip, students will:

🦬 Spend a day with Chris Helzer, Director of Science for The Nature Conservancy in Nebraska, learning how TNC manages grasslands with cattle and bison.

🛶 Canoe the Niobrara River for a day of adventure, exploration, and some incredible waterfalls.

🐄 Visit with a local rancher to see firsthand how grassland conservation and livestock production can work together.

🥾 Hike, share meals, and connect with representatives from organizations including the Sandhills Task Force, Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition, National Park Service, Nebraska Game and Parks, and World Wildlife Fund.

This is much more than a trip for range management or ecology majors. Students will explore how culture, economics, rural communities, politics, conservation, and agriculture all influence the way Nebraska’s landscapes are managed.

💲 Trip Fee: $350, which includes food, lodging, transportation, and site access.

🌟 This is a rare opportunity to experience the Niobrara landscape firsthand and meet the people making real-world decisions about its future.

Diane Nolan, information technology associate, will retire from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Sept. 4 after a 20-year career with the department. Nolan played an important role in the university's early computer-assisted instruction; she worked with faculty to use Blackboard and later Canvas as they incorporated more technology into their courses.
