UCLA students and alumni are at the forefront of climate education.

Andrea Gambino (’23, Ph.D., Education), founder of Inquire 2 Transform, and Amber Medina (’21, M.Ed., Elementary Education and Teaching), now contributing to a civics education project with the Los Angeles Superior Court, are helping to reshape how we teach environmental justice.

Their work is featured in Empowering Youth to Confront the Climate Crisis in English Language Arts—a new book that shares real classroom stories and media literacy strategies aimed at helping students confront climate disinformation and take action.

This powerful resource and call to action is co-edited by UCLA faculty member and longtime critical media literacy advocate, Professor Jeff Share.

Federal funding cuts don’t just hurt schools—they endanger our children’s future.

What does cutting federal funding for schools actually look like?

✏️  Less support for neurodivergent students.
🍎 No school lunch programs.
📉 Staff layoffs and overcrowded classrooms.
🎓Unaffordable higher education.

Cutting federal education funding doesn’t “tighten budgets” — it deepens injustice.

The National Education Association reports that in California, $9.8 billion federal dollars go toward K-12 resources and staffing in public schools.

When those funds are slashed, it’s students who pay the price.

Public education isn’t just a system—it’s a lifeline.

Our Ed&IS students get that. They’re out here rethinking what education can be: more accessible, more inclusive, and more just. Here’s what public education means to them:
“Embody the values that our society has...”
“Lowers barriers of access...”
“Allows a diversity of lived experiences....”
Their voices are shaping our future. When we fight for strong public schools, we’re fighting for every student, every story, and every future.

Share this if you believe in the power of public education. Let’s keep showing up—and keep making it better.

OP-ED in the Los Angeles Times by UCLA Ed&IS Dean Christina A. Christie

The second Trump administration is systematically eliminating funding and personnel for oversight and evaluating programs.
