With deep sadness, we write to let you know that Bonita Sanchez, who served as our director of Field education for 25 years, passed away on Memorial Day weekend. Bonita was a treasured member of our SSW community, a passionate social worker and active member of our local community and profession.

Priya Winston, BSW ’15, MSW ’17, PhD ’23, was chosen as the 2025 Woman of Excellence as an Emerging Professional by the Capital Region Chamber’s Women’s Business Council.

Priya is the Director of Curriculum and Clinical Excellence at Transitions, a program through The Arc Lexington that supports teens and young adults with autism and learning differences with college, career and independent life. She is also the Founder of Experts for Neurodivergent Young Adults.

Assistant Professor Dr. Angie Wootton received the Excellence in LGBTQ+ Scholarship award at the 2025 Lavender Award. This award is given to an LGBTQ+ faculty, staff or student whose research, publishing, or creative work forges brave new paths and furthers matters important to LGBTQ+ scholarship and representation.

The Lavender awards celebrate Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Q***r and Allied Faculty, Staff, and Students for their work in promoting LGBTQ+ Equity. These awards are particularly special because they are chosen by LGBTQ+ and Allied students, faculty, and staff to recognize other student, faculty and staff contributions to the UAlbany community.

Michael Grignon MSW ‘04 was named as an Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW) 2025 Fellow.

Michael is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the AOSW, as Past President, following his term as AOSW President in 2024. He has recently co-authored a publication on the essential and evolving nature of oncology social work from 2010-present. As a medical social worker, he remains committed to addressing the needs of those impacted by various medical conditions, with a focus on oncology.

On April 30, over 125 students from the College of Integrated Health Sciences presented posters on their internship and research experiences at the UAlbany Showcase, a day dedicated to hands-on learning. The School of Social Welfare is proud of our students who participated, showcasing research and fieldwork that reflects our ongoing commitment to health, equity, and community well-being. 🎉

“Seeing a space where all of the member countries have a seat at the table was awesome and inspiring. The hall was so grand; I don’t think I have ever seen anything like it,” said Genevieve Coonradt, a second-year Master of Social Work student.

Students from the College of Integrated Health Sciences visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York City earlier this month to tour the facility, learn about U.N.'s work and research efforts, and gain a deeper understanding of the organization's impact on global public health.
